corpsband
Bluecoats - Creep 2011 almost put this -- are we talking just the music or the entire production?
fsubone
SCV '99 or '00 both openers had almost silent starts that draw you in, and then smack you in the face with the volume once you think the whole opener is going to be quiet.

tulsaslide
Kathy, I think you're thinking of Blue Devils '91. The opener was mostly from "Commencement" from Stan Kenton's Adventures In Time and it's one of my favorites too--
JonW
There have been many great openers, right down to this very evening. Personally, my vote goes to the Anaheim Kingsmen of 1974 for "Mambo/Dance at the Gym". I fully recognize that most folks reading this were DNA molecules at the time. Some of them grew up to produce today's great openers. I'll go with that - and toss in '74s Blue Stars "Tiger Rag" Fast, lively and LOUD!
ordsw24
Phantom '89, mostly because it opened one of my all-time favorite shows ever.
shostahoosier
Blue Devils 1996 - I'm still looking for pieces of my face that were blown off by that insane hornline.
