hostrauser
It needed massive visual editing. Way too much going on. Too many silk changes! Too many stars in the drill! Too much Betsy Ross all over everything! Too much chaos in Amber waves, with scrims, flags of many nations, stalks of wheat, etc. etc.! Then ending with the ultimate "too too much" - the gigantic scrim featuring a sparkly Statue of Liberty (of questionable appearance) opened up in front of what was an already busy ending of American Flag drill with sparkly spinning silver stars. I'm exhausted just writing about it. The music was nice, so if they had cut out at least 40% of the clutter and simplified it all, it probably would have been great. It's not a coincidence that 1993 was very stark visually, with cream uniforms and the poles/geometric shapes used multiple times. But the seeds of 1993 are woven throughout the 1992 show, even though the two shows were very different. You can see in 1992 where Star really started to experiment with body movement from the corps proper for the first time, and then expanded the concept in 93. It wasn't the visual design that doomed Star in 92, it was the execution. Just not clean on Finals night. Cleaner visual execution and they repeat as champs. Same could be said of 93. In fact, while Star is still today remembered for their visual designs (the pageantry of Belshazzar's Feast, the cross to cross drill in Roman Images, plus 92 and 93), Star never won the Visual or Visual Effect captions in their corps history. In fact, Star never placed high than 3rd in Visual. The execution just never quite made it.

Visually that would shake things up.
84BDsop
They also lost George Zingali. We ALL lost George.....can you imagine what he would've come up with in following years had he not gotten sick???
GMichael1230
1992 Star of Indiana should have walked away that week in first place all three nights, with a second championship. Their "execution" that night was far and away much more crisp and cleaner than the Cavaliers. Everything about this show screamed championship, yet they wound up third. Lincoln
The brass line was absolutely amazing - mello runs so light and tight that you could bounce off them.
Corbin
So, is there some consensus that the show was just somewhat on the boring side? I just remember the reaction seeming more volatile than simply an entertainment issue.

Geoffrey I have to disagree with you on that. The execution problems during "Chester" were obvious to even a casual observer. There were bad brass entrances and phasing issues that did not occur during semis or quarters. If you go back and view the show on FN you will see even more problems with the visual performance. Particularly when the guard passes through the brass..... bad lines and even worse spacing issues are easily visible. Most of the rest of the program was performed very well, but during Chester the show was a mess and not something you expected from Star. skywhopper
I find this show so over the top and cheesy that I can't stand to watch it, so I can't really critique it.
