Rumblings from CADETLAND

There are housing issues wherever you go. Schools are just not a willing to let outside activities in... even when it makes them money... they feel there is too much risk involved.

Don't corps carry insurance policies that cover liability for their housing sites?

yes, but all insurance companies fight it out over claims - so the "site" is open to possible liability just the same

The south is not very friendly to drum corps at all.

Foul on the play. "Painting with too wide a brush"

For most of my life I have been associated with a small private school in New Orleans.

We hosted coaps every year I was asked.

One year housing fell through for a New Orleans show ( due to the show sponsor not knowing ####) and even though being a very small school and already housing Cavies, Don Whitley ( sp ? ) asked for help. We didn't bat an eye. We ended up with Cavies, Crossmen, North Star and Spirit. ( that got me 8 "Gold Seats" in B'ham for finals)

I have hosted Pioneer ( and even the Thing ), Madison ( at least 5 times), Teal, Cavies, Crossmen, Spirit, North Star and others I can't remember off the top of my head.

Sure, our facilities were not great 30 years ago with no a/c and very few showers or restrooms in the gyms, but whenever I got the call, we responded. As years passed we had a/c in one gym and a larger locker room with showers added. A second campus for the elementary school was added 6 blocks away with another gym and showers. By the mid 80's we had by far the best practice field in the area besides college or pro facilities.

Corps were given use of our ice machines, water and power as well as use of our facilities FOR FREE, every time.

I was always up front and honest about the short comings of our facility when corps would inquire and in many cases they would say uhhh no thanks only to later need us.

Madison ( during Scotts tenure ) would call me and ask if this is Mike %$#$% that is the band director at that little school outside of New Orleans.......and make plans at least a month in advance ( both because of our practice field and because of State Trooper friends of mine who marched corps would give them an escort to the Quarter)

Sometimes I would be at a show and Moe Latour would find me and ask if I could do something for a corps who's housing fell through. Yep, lets go talk to the director and let him know what we have.

I can't tell you how many times I got chewed out for things like a corps sstill sleeping in the hall when summer school started or a huge phone bill all to a certain area of the country. I can't tell you how many times I heard snide remarks from cooking staffs because we didn't have a kitchen available for their use.

But no matter what, I always tried to help, afterall, I marched corps and these are my people. There have been several people and several schools in the New Orleans area that have bent over backwards to help as well as host drum corps.

I retired due to health problems this past year but when I got an email about housing problems I started to make a few calls, that is, until I saw the FB posting and my 1st thought was "don't touch THAT hornets nest"

Most schools have no clue as to what a drum & bugle corps is and most don't care. It's usually the band directors who either have marched or taught corps that make housing work out. Those people are all over the South just like other parts of the country, but to say the South isn't drum corps friendly, I sure hope you're talking about the weather because I can agree on that> Marching corps from 70-75 in corps out of New Orleans is a beast and we were used to the heat and humidity.

Agreed. Post on your personal blog if the frustration just needs to come out, but there's no need whatsoever to plaster the Cadets' front-page with stories of how Timmy failed Trigonometry and will be attending summer school, then recounting the same thing via email blast to anyone and everyone on their list.

Perhaps he is doing that for other corps' edification or for their own so they can learn from mistakes and prepare for secondary plans in case something like that happens in the future.

decry the tactics - but it sounds like it worked // much better housing/practice situation for the corps for next week - which is what matters:

Update on the Cadets Across the South

With the assistance of sponsors, band directors, and alumni, the Cadets bit of trouble across the South has been cleared up, and we are looking for an excellent few days.

Here is a synopsis of the coming week.

Monday, July 22 – Lafayette, LA

The Cadets will arrive at 8 am in Lafayette, LA where they will set up for the day at the University Stadium – CAJUN STADIUM. The Drivers will have rooms, the food truck will be hooked up and showers will be available at the Aquatic Center.

This is the show site so the Cadets will rehearse until 5 pm until taking a breather prior to the corps ‘ performance.

Tuesday, July 23rd – Ocean Springs, MS

In order to rehearse, the Cadets need a stadium. As it turned out, there is a corps at the show stadium Tuesday, and the sponsor WAS allowing us the opportunity to use the same stadium Wednesday but that was going to be our beach day.
So … changes had to occur.

We will be staying at Alma Bryant High School in Irvington, AL. We should arrive about 5 am on the 23rd.

We will perform the evening of the 23rd at Ocean Springs High School. I believe we are appearing at 9:07 am.

We will return to Alma Bryant after the show.

Wednesday, July 24th – Irvington, AL and the BEACH

Our plans are still sketchy but I think we are going to try something unusual for the Cadets

7 am or earlier – We are going to head to the beach. I believe we are looking at Dauphin Island with the assistance of the mayor

We will be at the beach from 7 am – noon.

We will then return to the school, rehearse from 2 pm – 8 pm, and depart for Chattanooga, Tennessee about 10 pm

Thursday, July 25th – Chattanooga, TN

We will arrive at 7 am … staying at Red Bank High School. After a bit of rest we will be rehearsing a good part of the day at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga – an awesome location. We will be in there late; at least until 10 pm or so as the plans now stand.

More detail here will come

Friday, July 26th – Chattanooga and Murfreesboro, Tn
We will be rehearsing until late afternoon after which we will take the two hour drive, but one hour of time as we move back to Central time, to the Tour of Champions event here in Murfreesboro. TN

Goodness, it's not like housing issues are singularly a Cadets issue. You've won the title 10 times, in contention for an 11th, get over it. He would blow a gasket if he was with Pioneer. I get the strive for and push for excellence and wanted to be self contained, but appreciate the ride. The founder of NorthFace said...the adventure begins when things go haywire.
