My point is, it would slowly level the field if corps had more money, In general the overall quality of the corps would rise because when you have nice things and a top notch staff people wouldn't necessarily go get experience at one corps then move on to a top corps...they would stay, which would allow that corps to raise their talent level, then you could get into a feeder corps program and have your own farm system happening. If corps could figure out how to bring in more revenue that would solve a lot of their problems. Star had the grant, the buses and the refueling station, and when we toured with them in 90, we were envious of their bus, food truck and just generally having everything better than we did...which is the main reason I went there in 91, (unfortunately wasn't able to go on tour, in their opener you can still the tenor hole until the 4th guy from the pit hooks in with them). There stuff was much nicer than Spirit's, and a main reason my buddy who went to JSU with me did not march Spirit but rather drove from Alabama to Indiana for three years...more money = better everything. How do you build parity in the activity? Is it just a matter of dollars and cents? How about Corps reputation or staff reputation? What if next year Pioneer announced they had an all-star design team and staff, there was no tuition and they would be serving the finest food? Are the corps members each negotiating for the price of each meal, bed, and bus seat each day on tour? Do they pay for maintenance on their instruments or for cleaning their uniforms? Or do they pay a fee and share food, transportation, and upkeep costs throughout the season via a centralized power structure that makes all decisions for them? I don't mean to be snarky, but there are only so many world class phenomanally talented performers the level of the top 3 or 4 shows who can both play AND move at that phenomenal level. Family situations, educational/college tuitions, and other factors would have to be equalized for any real move in the number of World Class units at this level to increase. It's not just a drum corps/DCI thing. Even BITD when DCI had almost 100 corps competing, most were at the Div. 2 and 3 levels. And before that, when corps were 1/3 the size of present corps memberships, there were only so many nationally ranked powerhouses. It is pure Egalitarianism and a form of Marxist philosophy. In a manner of speaking, what we have now is a level playing field, in that an individual has equality of opportunity - not outcome. I don't believe a level playing field has ever moved anyone to become "Great"... Just don't see it - the only level playing field they get is in a domed stadium. The rest they work for.
