That Hitchcock scene (and credit should also go to the screenwriter John Michael Hayes) was presumably inspired in part by the legend of Richard I, imprisoned during the Crusades, being discovered by his minstrel, Blondel de Nesle. The legend has Blondel traveling about, singing one of Richard's favorite songs, until he hears Richard singing in response. Coincidentally, the same legend is generally agreed to be the source for Sam's discovery of Frodo in the Tower of Cirith Ungol in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which was published just a year earlier.
