I've been wearing NB 608s (original, not the v2, v3, or whatever other "updates" they have) for going on 30 years. There've been a few times when I forced myself to try something else, but nothing else fits as well or lasts as long. Plus you can still get them for under $50! NB has a reputation of being very accurate with sizing.
C.Holland
i wore either Nike or Adidas running shoes. (whichever was on sale) simply because they're light, and dry quickly if they got wet. bring two pair on tour. I have duck feet, and for some reason, these worked the best on my feet. I hated NB's. I still do. They don't agree with my heel. But not every shoe is for every human. Edited May 1, 2023 by C.Holland

My last pair was $89 but still way less than Jim’s Hokas.
greg_orangecounty
No need to get super fancy or have a custom fit. ECCO is the best shoe maker in my opinion in either tennis, or dress, but they're not cheap. A great pair can be had for under $200.00, and they will last more than one Drum Corps season.

Slather those shoes up with some Kiwi Shoe Polish, a coating of Krylon Spray Paint, and they will be indestructible! If I recall from a couple years ago, Krylon gold looked pretty sharp. Sadly, Backflip Jesus didn't get to wear them...
JAZZER
Ok, long distance runner/retired music educator chiming in. [60 plus marathons/50 milers/30+ years teaching] A) Echoing do your selection at a running specialist store for a fitting. B) Recommend a lower heel to toe drop. Share with store expert the amount of non forward-direction HOURS accumulated each week while rehearsing/relocating/move-ins, etc. C) Do not negate shoes designated for trail running! Many models are light enough, supportive enough, and certainly durable with required amounts of cushioning for the activity. D) Don't let high prices scare you off. A $200 pair that does the job is WELL worth the investment when it supplies the needed durability. Shopping for previous year models saves some bucks. E) Sizing up helps with toe damage AND excess wear in the toe area. A wider model may also be necessary to accomplish this foot "float". F) Learn alternative lacing techniques. Lot's of great articles on how to do this, specifically the Heel Lock methodology. Comfort & function are key! Trail Runner magazine articles may be helpful. "Best Of" articles from each year. My son is going thru the list of shoes that everyone here recommended. He is doing the grown man thing and wants to make the choice lol. Which is perfectly fine by me. He is the one that's going to be out there this summer, not me lol. Mandarins don't report to camp till May 31st, so he has a little time.
