Calgary Stampede Showband

Recommended Posts

I know that Calgary is allowed to compete with Woodwinds in DCI because the circuit they are part of has woodwinds. What circuit is that? I haven’t been able to find any information

I had questions last year when I saw them live in Indy & it was answered somewhere in the 2022 forums.  I honestly don't remember the rules but I'm going to try to the search feature.  Are they returning to Indy this year?  It was a fun & entertaining group last year!

Addition: think they competed in Sound Sport as well?

In 2014, the Showband received the distinguished Sudler Shield from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, one of the highest forms of recognition for marching band programs. In 2017, the Stampede Showband represented Calgary and Canada as they competed at the prestigious World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland where they earned a Gold Medal with Distinction. The Showband returned to Drum Corps International’s SoundSport and Drumline Battle competitions in 2018 and swept their categories with awards for Best in Class, Drumline Battle Champion, Outstanding Performance, and Best of Show. The Calgary Stampede Showband was proud to participate for the fourth time in the prestigious Rose Parade in Pasadena, California on January 1, 2019. The band is proud to be a six-time World Champion of Marching Show Bands - with their most recent win in July 2019.

I believe international get different rules like when Jubal used to compete in Open class when they were all aged.

Found it from the 2022 prelims thread.  International groups addressed on Page 14, Policy 512:

http://publications.dci.org/books/mkpd/

Basically, eligible international groups can use their local rules (instrumentation, etc) but can't displace an eligible DCI member if they advance to Semis or Finals.

DCI is like the NCAA - bureaucratic inconsistency isn’t an issue for them.

And the Showband competed this weekend in the World Association of Marching Showbands (WAMSB) championships in Buckhannon, West Virginia. The Empire Statesmen won this event in 1998 with their West Side Story show when it was in London.
