The photo on the starting line at VFW Nationals did not match this one as did the McCormick photo someone mentioned. It was tagged as 64 World Open. It might be 63 VFW Nationals in Seattle but that does not look like a World's Fair Grounds, probably 63 Illinois State VFW or American Legion contest. drumno5 Posted December 16, 2009 Share Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) FWIW, I just did a restoration on a vintage Ludwig snare, rewrapping it to those original late 50s colors, as a gift from the Cavalier Alumni Assn for the Reilly Raiders in recognition of their assistance during "The Fight" at '57 VFW Nationals. Wow, looks great! Fortunately, green and silver glass glitter are still easy to come by. Now if I could just get Delmar to start making the old Slingerland Capri pearl wrap again... The St. Vincent Cadets attacked the Cavies after they won VFW. Buy the book "Making of the Green Machine". That story is in there as well hundreds more. Cavaliers were one of the first if not the first corps to use plastic drum heads rather than skin heads. Needless to say they were water repelent so they didn't break any heads in the rain. Reilly Raiders also wore green so they borrowed our drums for Senior VFW Finals. Needless to say, both corps won drums and that seemed to be the deciding factor for each to win their respective championships. As alluded to, St. Vincents Cadets were not too happy as were a number of east coast fans and a fight broke out. It ended up Reilly Raiders and The Cavaliers versus some unhappy drum corps. Since that time there has been a special bond between Reilly Raiders and the Cavaliers. There are a number of stories about some of the crazy antic that happened during the fight that have been passed down through the years. (insert shameless plug for the book here).
