gotbones3
at the crossmen a few people met some nights to have a small bible study-ish group at spring training, and every sunday morning one of the drum majors and a bunch of the volunteers would sing hymns during breakfast. always brightened things up in the food line, haha. you can probably get a group together to hold your own prayer service or what have you in the evenings or whatever, just talk to a drum major or administrator. Mad Mello
Scouts had an active bible study/prayer group when I was there, and I've been told of similar things in most other corps. Good luck with this.
Kansan
Wow, really interesting thread. I really don't think Blue Devils D&BC have even thought about this much if at all. I could be just plain wrong, I have the impression Drum corps is their religion. To me this appears true of all the California and East Coast Corps. Live, Eat, Drink, Sleep and Worship, Drum Corps. I saw Pioneer for the first time in a long time at the Wichita show and really liked what they did. I like quality of their Drum Line and the Sound of G Bugles. I like the organization a little more now after reading this thread. Tour is what you make of it. You can make yourself miserable by doing all the wrong things. You can get sucked into all the bad stuff real easy or you can follow your moral cumpas. You can observe your religion if you want and I encourage you to do that. It do my heart good to see my year in Iraq fighting for our freedom wasn't all for not. Thanks for bringing up this subject. WOOHOO
Where I marched, we had a group of people who would meet to talk about religious stuff at night during rehearsal days, if we didn't leave the housing site that night. As far as sunday church goes, I quite honestly never payed attention. I GUESS I AM A HEATHEN!!!!!
johnweldy
I never heard word one about anything like this when I was in the 'Coats. At the time, though, I wasn't in the most church-going stage of my existance. Grew up in a stifilingly-conservative Baptist church and once college hit, I was outta there. You know, in a thread about church, we should really be using some of these...
kusankusho
When I taught Conqueror in the early 80's we had a girl who went to church regularly. She tried to find a local church with an early mass so as to keep the disruption to the practice schedule to a minimum. I'd suggest you discuss it with BD staff at your first audition camp to be sure you can come to a workable agreement.
suncontra99
As a marching member we used to say the Our Father if I remember correctly before a performance. We even had to escort the female members of the corps while we were in uniform. Have to love the south! In 2001 I remeber seeing some Phantom kids take part in a bible study. Didn't see much @ the Glassmen but I was only a volunteer for a week or so. I definitely remember the Crossmen kids having a bible study group and one of the bus drivers taking part. In 2005 I took the kids once to a Catholic Church in Naperville. One van, 10 kids at 7 A.M. or so. Just be sure to plan things in advance (Volunteer driving, practice schedule, etc..). I am Catholic but that is not why I decided to offer the kids that particular church. I knew that Catholic mass is only an hour and if need be 45 minutes, so it fit our schedule. Just remember that it doesn't matter where you go, just go! Some kids decided not to go when they found out what type of church we were going to attend. CavAlum
I think taking the entire group is wrong if some are opposed, but I also think if travel and time allow that all members should be afforded the chance to worship as often as possible during the summer. That being said, we never churched because we were always traveling/recovering on Sunday mornings.
PioSop06
We used to have a bible study at PR.My div3 corps actually went to church on sundays and pioneer used to as well. We still do, just not EVERY Sunday.
Serenity
As far as my experience, it's never even been brought up really. The only focus is playing and marching. Thats what we paid to do all summer, and that's exactly what we did. The best thing is to be prepared for the worst: where your corps will have no accomodations to your religion, and you will have to do it on YOUR time. If thats what you expect, and then you find that they do accomodate, then its bonus points for you.
