When I was 9 years old, playing in a small jr. corps in New Bedford, Ma.

someone played the Ct. Hurricanes at the 64 World Open, I WAS FLORED!

That remains (in my mind) one of the great drum corps shows of all time!

Tropical Heat Wave, Stormy Weather, Hello Dolly, Mag. 7, Caravan was awesome,

Bill Bailey!

This is the show that did if for me!

Thanks to http://www.corpsreps.com for helping me fill in some of the blanks.

The first corps show where I got to see the corps from the stands, was a Senior show in NJ in 1976. At such a young age, those corps seemed like the greatest entertainers EVER to me.

From 1976, I still most love Sunrisers' "Spain," Skyliners' "Elks Parade," and Hurricanes' "Magnificent Seven." But maybe Caballeros' "Bully" and "Echano" are in a tie for my overall favorite.

After scores were announced, the skies opened up and most people fled from the pouring rain. But the man who introduced us to big-time drum corps told us to sit tight. He said, "Wait 'til you see this." The Hurricanes stayed put and seemed to revel in the downpour. Huh? They put up their horns and played "Hallelujah" louder than anything I'd thought possible on God's green Earth!

Overall favorite junior corps songs? Here's just a small sampling...

1975 Madison Scouts' "Slaughter on 10th Avenue"

1976 Blue Devils' "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor"

1976 27th Lancers' "Crown Imperial"

1978 Bridgemen's "Ritual Fire Dance" and "Harlem Nocturne"

1978 Kilts' "My Favorite Things" *

1980 Blue Devils "New York Fantasy"

1980 Bridgemen's "Thunder & Blazes" and "In The Stone"

1980 Madison Scouts' "Malaguena"

1982 Crossmen's "Russian Christmas Music"

1983 Garfield Cadets' "Rocky Point Holiday"

1990 Phantom Regiment's "Bacchanale"

1991 Star of Indiana's "Roman Images"

1991 Blue Devils' "Commencement" (from "Adventures In Time")

1992 Cavaliers' "Gavorkna Fanfare" and "Peterloo Overture"

1995 Cavaliers' "Mars" (from "The Planets')

1998 Cadets' "Stonehenge"

2002 Santa Clara Vanguard's "Trivandrum"

2003 Phantom Regiment's "Wild Nights From Harmonium"

2005 Cadets' "Twisted Nerve" (from "Kill Bill")

* I found out years later that Larry Kerchner wrote it for 1973 St. Andrew's Bridgemen first.

Still, Kilts pushed the tempo and breathed new life into it.

Cavies- "Elenanor Rigby"

"Sea Hawk" was 1980 (toughest part I ever played while marching)

What year did Cavies play "Eleanor Rigby"? That had to be great, but I don't remember it. I remember Blessed Sac playing it around 1968 or 69.

Jim Oswald

Reading Buccaners 1965 through 1973

Thanks, Jim I should have known that, but couldn't remember!

I also loved that exit of "Something" with the reprise of "Russian Sailor's Dance" and the closing fanfare of "Ebb Tide." Haven't listend to it in years, but it still stands out in my mind as a great closer.

Do you recall the "Big Sounds" concert in the winter of '66-'67 in Reading? We (Hawthorne) were your guests, and the combined corps played you're "Beyond the Sea" together to close the show. Every time I hear that song, I think of that. I'm not sure, but we may have also played our "Strangers in the Night" together as well. Two classic exit numbers, and a unique experience.

Most people today are unaware that Reading ran such a show and always hosted one corps. Not a traditional 'corps concert' show, but a mix of the two corps, comedy sketches, musical performances by individuals and small groups from the two corps, etc. I wonder if a recording exists?

Almost all Final Fanfares from the Corps in the Sixties brought goosebumps.......

1967 Cavaliers "Somewhere" from West Side Story. What an incredible build-up to their crossing the finish line.

Also Boston Crusaders 60's Persian Market finish. Loud and wild rumble like a thunderstorm closing into a soft cymbal crash. Classic!
