You said "perhaps" but don't seem to have actually digested what wilme861 said. There was no "fitting" anyone in. Thanks to technology (Competition Suite), the numbers can ALL be adjusted at ANY time throughout the contest, including after the final corps performs. This was NOT the case decades ago when judges wrote their scores on paper sheets and turned them in immediately after a corps performed. The spreads that a judge finally submits are CHOICES--not accidental due to running out of room. If the judge truly feels two corps are practically equal but has to put one over the other, that's when you see subcaptions vary by 0.05 instead of just 0.1. Your original argument was far more valid in 1987 when judges COULDN'T adjust scores after the fact; in today's world, there's no validity at all.
