  1. I think it is just based on the fact that corps have used silver horns for years. It probably started way back in the 30's or 40's as a way to differentiate us from bands.
  2. Here's a question for all of you prognosticators: out of all of you who do NOT currently march in a corps, how many have actually been to any corps camps this winter? How many have actually seen what is going on at the corps that you are making predictions for? And, if you have seen a corps or two, have you seen just the public performances at the end of camps, or the actual work going on all weekend? I can tell you I have seen several corps at camps this winter and there may be some pretty big surprises come June.
  3. From other activities I am involved with, I do know that many school districts now require anyone using their facilities who is not a direct program of the district to have at least a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy. Can you also imagine the cost of insuring the vehicles like the trucks, buses, vans, etc.? It's amazing there are any corps left that can operate in today's economy.
  4. Yeah, he's taken an activity of 100's of corps and widdled it down to about 45. ^0^
  5. What did Kirt Gowdy call them back in 88/89? "The big red band from Bergen County"? Shame they moved, because they're getting really close to that description now. The recent alums won't be able to get ###### at me. I stopped supporting them financially several years ago, when George first ###### off many of the most ardent supporters of this activity. BTW, those "band kids" they say are the saviors of the activity will never spend the tens of thousands of dollars that I did supporting the activity. My support is now focused on a few remaining corps that still treat all of their members, staff, volunteers, and alums as something special, not just something to be used for a while and then discarded. George has become really good at that.
  6. Yeah, he's right! Let's talk about sharks, or fat ladies singing, or beachballs in the stands, or drum majors with lawn chairs...... :P
  7. Anything done by Dave Lang of the Colts. 'nuff said.
  8. Uhhhhh..... your corps is not new or returning from a hiatus. You do not need to be reapproved. That's why you are already on the schedule, as is Memphis, BDB, SCVC, Spartans, etc.
  9. Silk City Rhythms June 24, 2007 Belding, MI Performing corps: Blue Knights Blue Stars The Cavaliers Colts Crossmen Dutch Boy Glassmen Troopers This should give everybody an idea of what to ecpect in August.
  10. Based on their current staff's track record and years of experience, their current membership's level of experience (vets and rookies), and the organization's overall progress in the last few years, it will be Blue Stars and it will be this year.
  11. Unfortunately, there are too many people out there who think they can make a living off being a drum corps instructor. It is NOT supposed to be a career, folks. It is a youth activity (and a very small one at that) that is meant to be, first and foremost, about the members. If you want to know what it is truly supposed to be about, look at the volunteers on the cook trucks, the uniform repair folks, etc. These people all have real jobs and sacrifice their only vacation time every summer for the good of the kids. You know, those people that many of the young, inexperienced instructors take for granted? I agree that folks who are contracted for a certain function should be paid what they are owed. BUT, they can wait in line with the other "stakeholders" for the payments. The first priority should be the safe travel, feeding, and care of the members. Once the show fees arrive from DCI after the season ends, then the staff, gas charge cards, etc. should be paid. And, just MHO, if we keep allowing all of these public attacks against every corps that has a person come on here and whine how they were mistreated, very soon there will be no activity left to talk about. We've lost several corps already this year because of these type of actions, and now this one is put under the gun by the "experts" of DCP. Try volunteering for one of these corps before you ##### about them. Old saying about "walking a mile in the other guys shoes".
  12. Speaking from personal experience, the brass and marching staff at my son's Div. I corps have a lot more education, experience, knowledge, ability, etc. than the so-called "music faculty" at his high school. He learned more from the "special tech" they had at the last camp than he will ever learn from his Director of Bands. I had some people I know watch the instruction this guest instructor gave to the hornline last camp and they commented "those kids just got a Master's level class in breathing and technique". So, his Director of Bands is more a "faculty member" than his corps staff??? NOT!
  13. St. Lucy's vs. Blessed Sac ^0^ Not so nice church boys.
  14. Gonna show my age, but there was a very famous picture from the late 60's/early 70's of a horn player marching back field, holding his horn up in one hand while desperately trying to pull up his pants from around his knees with the other hand b**bs . I think it was printed in either Drum Corps News or Drum Corps Pagent (?).
  15. 1980 pre season topic: Rumor central: I heard that Garfield has barely enough members left to field a softball team....
  16. You need alot more than just the granting of D1 status. You have to make top 21 three consecutive years before you get a vote. At this year's meeting, Blue Stars and Academy did not get to vote due to this rule.
  17. On the new TATSU ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain Winner is the one who doesn't lose their instrument. http://www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountai...su-virtual.html
  18. Try all of your former teachers, all forms of doctors you've ever seen, all businesses your family has shopped at regularly, veteran organizations in your area, all other relatives. Don't leave anyone out because even $10 helps.
  19. I happen to be ACTIVELY involved in drum corps right now, and for the last forty years, and spent over (60) days on the road last summer working with a Div. I corps. I also have a child who is currently marching. My entire family has been in the activity for a very long time and remains one of the most ACTIVE to this day. But we do not like amplification, vocals, or electronics. So, I guess that shoots down your blanket statement that "the ACTIVE DRUM CORPS community think the exact same thing". Learn to be more tolerant of others' right to their opinions and life will be a whole lot more pleasant for you.
  20. Very nice show announcement. This could be very interesting. Is it me, or do the corps from 11-15 seem to be really kicking it up a notch this year?
