  1. Anaheim Kingsmen, 1974, "Symphonie Fantastique" especially with the difficult drill (by mid-70's standard) Bobby Hoffman wrote.
  2. I stopped watching Drum Corps sometime in the early 80’s due to all the props and too much subjective judging. I recently began paying attention again ONLY because The Kingsmen Alumni Corps is slated to perform at DCI prelims this year. It’s so disturbing to me that adding woodwinds is even a topic for discussion. The second woodwinds are added the activity of Drum and BUGLE Corps ceases to exist, period, end of story. If you want to join a Drum and BUGLE Corps, GREAT, but learn how to play a bugle, drum, spin a rifle or flag.
  3. Why don't you look at the University of Southern California? The Spirit of Troy, aka "The Greatest Marching Band in the History of the Universe," has appeared on the Grammy’s, Oscars, performed with Outkast, The Offspring, John Williams, George Clinton and recorded a song (Tusk) with Fleetwood Mac. They go to either Europe, or Asia, every year and appear on T.V. during the Rose Bowl or BCS Championship game almost every year. Going to USC puts you in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world where many musicians are employed either in Hollywood or higher education. In fact, Herb Alpert is an alum of the band. Fight On! http://www.usc.edu/dept/band/home/index.php
  4. "Light-years ahead"???!!! As far as color guards today are concerned, I agree, but only in terms of what they do vs. what guards did in the 70's. However guards today are light-years BEHIND in terms of cleanliness, and cleanliness is next to Godliness. Rifle work today looks like baton work from the baton & drum squads of yesteryear - and just about as "clean". I'd rather see a triple thrown by 10 rifles with exact rotation, height and caught with a single-clean "WHAP" than 10 rifles throw a quad while doing a ballet move and catching it within a second of each other.
  5. Not only that, they were gorgeous Southern California girls; sweet, nice, but tough at the same time and God help you if you broke their ranks. And if you were fortunate enough to date one, you were considered a "rock-star" by association amongst your Kingsmen brothers.
  6. ...............................Ohhhhhh, no you D'int!!! ^0^
  7. Hrothgar15, For what it's worth, and because I keep running into it on all your posts, I think your signature thing regarding a "theocracy" is the dumbest thing I've ever seen on this forum.
  8. What the hell? Where are the Anaheim Kingsmen????? Is it just me? I don't see us.
  9. I'm probably old enough to be your parents and I suffered the same thing you're going through now. I marched in the 1970's in a drum corps called the Anaheim Kingsmen (we won the very first DCI in 1972). Anyway, they hated drum corps, HATED IT, and did not let me march. Their reasoning was it distracted me from making plans for college (which it did) and I moved out of the house the day after I graduated from high school in order to march. They never saw me march one time but it was worth it. And I did end up going to college and graduated with honors. Good luck to you.
  10. I'll let you know. I'm going up there this weekend for the USC vs. Stanford game.
  11. It's partially true. If a Kingsmen guard member had to use the ladies room while in uniform, they are accompanied by a minimum of one other guard member. They walk, in step, side-by-side with their arms folded in front of them; they do not speak to anyone and keep their eyes straight ahead. This tradition will be maintained in the alumni corps. If you think that's extreme, you should see them at the drinking fountain.
  12. I'm going because I get to march for the first time in 29 years.
  13. While in Pasadena in the vacinity of the Rose Bowl, do NOT break their rank, just walk around. They don't smile, dance, or take prisoners.
  14. That is Debbie Johnson, Kingsmen Rifle 1974. She is as regal in real life as she appears in that picture.
  15. After DCI prelims in 72, it was Santa Clara's to lose.............and they did, by doing a terrible, TERRIBLE, show (for them) at finals. I believe they had a bunch of dropped equipment and other sorts of bad stuff. That's why I like the tic system, you just never know...........
  16. I want to march in the 2007 Anaheim Kingsmen Alumni Corps because, just for one evening, I want to feel like a 17 year-old kid again.
  17. ..............I had to shut the door of my office so my staff wouldn't see me cry. It was beautiful, thank you. We must stay united as a nation, no matter our political point of view, because division is the only way these sons-of-#####es can defeat us. God Bless America.
  18. The Rose Bowl seats "90,000+" according to their own website and has 77 rows.
  19. Only 20K..............., that's it???? Wow, I haven't been to DCI finals since Jimmy Carter was in office so I forgot what attendance was like I'm now changing my mind about the Rose Bowl as a good venue for DCI. 20K in the Rose Bowl will seem like a drop in the bucket and cavernous. A smaller venue should be used and there are plenty of them in Southern California. OTOH, maybe there will be a huge increase in attendance. Los Angeles has a TON of people and the high school band scene thrives, even though there are no major Division 1 Junior Corps in the area.
  20. Kevin was also drum major for the Anaheim Kingsmen in 1973.
  21. In 1977, the Anaheim Kingsmen were done in by one particular field judge who had a vendetta against our director at the time. Maybe someone knows how to access the M&M scores from prelims that year. It should show the discrepancies between what he gave us vs. the others. Heck, we even beat SCV in drums and still didn't make finals that year. It sucked.
  22. Only one person has ever written the score for the first and second place DCI finalists in history. His name is Mike Duffy and he did it for the Anaheim Kingsmen and Blue Stars in 1972.
  23. Nawww. The activity belongs to the kids who march today, not those that marched yesterday. I wouldn't want to impose on them the style, music and uniforms we had back-in-day. Let them decide for themselves what they want to do. I marched in the 70's and I would have been ###### to have had to do a drum corps show from the 1940's. If you want a taste of retro, we'll give it to you good in 07 in Pasadena.
