My guess is that DCI realized that the original Countdown format would undercut sales of the older years.

I only recently discovered Metheny, so this really excites me. Marginally related story: I've picked my kids (ages 5 and 8) up from school, and we're listening to one of their kids' CDs. The song has clapping on it, and after a few moments they start clapping in time with the music. I'm inherently evil, it seems, so I put in my First Circle CD. They try to clap along, but have trouble for some reason. Finally, my daughter asks, "Daddy, is there something wrong with the CD player?"

I'd probably prefer random within groups of four.

At the very very very very very last minute, in fact, AFTER DCI had started making DVDs, the composer decided not to authorize the "synchronization release", or somesuch thing that is required to record the work to DVD. So the section had to be edited out. Some fortunate sould got the DVDs taht had already been shipped.

That was probably just some bad clams.

As far as opening statements go, when you listen to 96 Regiment and realize that the opening statement is a contra soli, you know you're in for a bad-azz ride.
