  1. I mostly agree with this, but I see The Cadets and Cavies swapping a bit throughout the season..up to finals.
  2. I actually marched 4 years with the same corps, so I guess you could say I remained 'loyal'; however, I still find the notion that someone should remain loyal to a particular corps ridiculous. For the amount of money most of these kids spend to participate with these organizaions, they should be doing it with an organization they're happy with and that best fits them. If that means jumping around a few times, then so be it. People should really stop being so judgemental.
  3. I'd venture to say the title is open game right now. With that said, I don't see Cavies taking a plunge. The talent was there. The programming was not. I do see Cadets heading up though.
  4. Creating controversy where none exists is what many would label as "trolling." But if you want to go that route, the changing of the story line makes the show itself much less controversial, imo (if it ever was to begin with). That said, I somewhat enjoy the show more now since they've made these changes, and I'll still take the Cavies "inside the box is a comfort zone and boring" approach.
  5. Doesn't bother me, but I guess I'm not so easily annoyed. Just seems rather trivial, to be honest. I mean, it's happening prior to the corps performing their show. 'much ado about nothing' if you ask me.
  6. For now... Brass: SCV (Phantom in a close 2nd) Percussion: Cavies (if they keep it up...they may have a shot at the drum title this year) Overall: SCV
  7. Bingo! Every corps is guilty of having developed a formula that works for them and sticking with it, for the most part. And, there's nothing wrong with that -- perform to your strengths. It's just funny the Cavies get slammed for it more -- just like The Cadets get slammed for narration, and so on. It's a DCP past time That said, it's early in the season... the show will continue to morph... as other corps' shows will as well.
  8. I didn't know if I disliked one corps' use of narration that I must dislike any other shows that use it, or risk being labeled as a hypocrite or idiot. **takes note, and jots that down into his drum corps fan rule book**
  9. Even though it is technically private property, if it is open to the public it becomes public space -- just like malls. However, the big difference here is that if you are on private property and asked to stop, then you are obligated to honor that request. Unless DCI specifically posts signs disclosing their policy or makes it known when purchasing a ticket, or in some other verbal/written manner to the spectators at the event, it would be fairly hard to prevent an individual from legally distributing such work.
  10. I find SCV more entertaining, as well. There's more substance , imo. And, while I think BD is a great corps and executes their shows superbly, it just seems too "sterile." I loved their opener this past season, but grew bored quickly after -- even spaced out a few times. That said, I do enjoy some of BD's shows from the '80s.
  11. Percussion Pit - Phantom Battery - Phantom Brass Cadets Guard BD and Crown
  12. Star '91 (as biased as they come ) HM: '89 & '99 Vanguard, '84 Garfield
  13. Since no one has yet mentioned it, I thought I'd bring it up (it's not really a great big secret as some seem to think). You can find a recap of a lot of the contributions Star and Bill have made to individual corps, and DCI as a whole on the SOI website, HERE.
  14. I don't know, I've heard RCC sound like a crap a few times on those drums Seriously though, it's really just a matter of preference. A few lines I work with use Dynasty, and I've found nothing terribly wrong with them, myself. In fact, I'm a fan of their tenors...probably the most solid mount I've seen. Sure there are things that they could do better, but that's true with a lot of other companies out there too.
  15. Why must they keep all their eggs in one basket? I wish them all the luck with this new venture of theirs, and may even drive out to see it.
  16. Is instrumentation really "tradition," or is it the beliefs and customs most drum corps have subscribed to over the years? Sure the methods have changed, but the end product is still producing a show for the football field, the experiences had, etc. If we're going to argue that instrumentation should not change due to past tradition, then let's just go back to fife & drums. Anyway, this hasn't gotten so far off track, heh.
  17. From what I've seen as an enlisted classifier for the Navy, this is mostly true. On average, new enlistees mirror that of the population at-large in terms of income levels, but mostly exeed in terms of education, since the military places great emphasis on it. In fact, it's next to impossible to enlist without a GED, and most jobs are only available to those with a diploma. Most candidates have some prior college education. Anyway back to the actual discussion... ;)
  18. Two corps out of how many? As a whole, it hardly dilutes "equality" within the activity.
  19. I don't get why people can't understand that 1st place does not equate most entertaining. Last year the Blue Devils had a well executed show, which reflected in the scores. I thought they deserved the placement they received; however, I did not find the show as entertaining as a few others which placed lower. That's entirely my opinion, and I'm sure others will disagree. And yes, it is an opinion forum, so I don't see why people get so ruffled up when *gasp* others don't particularly care for some shows, regardless of placement.
  20. It takes two to argue. It continues because both sides want to have the last word, heh OR This is a discussion forum, where anybody can have a platform to speak their mind, no matter who is listening. That said, I'm not saying the "old farts" don't matter
  21. Talk about doomsayers... Anyway, I doubt very few will, just as we've seen with previous implementations of new rules.
  22. Perhaps not in the near future, but the name probably will change as the activity continues to "progress" (if you see it as progression). The name is only valuable to those who may be familiar with the activity. I'd question the value it holds with those just being introduced to "drum corps". To them, you could probably call it by any other name and it would still be just as sweet.
  23. I'm not sure what coverage he was referring to on DCI's site, but living in LA myself, I can honestly say there was tons of media coverage finals week throughout most of the area. I was actually surprised by the amount of coverage it gained.
  24. I marched in the early 90's. As for turning back the clock, I wouldn't want to. Some of the shows today are simply amazing. I appreciate them all for what they are.
