  1. Yes chrome. Actually I can put air through some of my bugles. I also have 2 Deg Dynasty II sops, and a Deg Mello that is the identical twin to the King, in terms of the appearance. But I don't play the King because it's too nice. I got the King K-50 off Ebay and the owner didn't know much about it. I asked about drum corps but there was no connection. It's really in too good shape to have been played by a corps, unless it was some local parade unit of some kind. It came out of Wisconsin. I also have a King K-60 French Horn bugle in very good condition, one of two King Frenchies that were owned by the Sky Riders. That is the only horn I have that I know of that was owned by a corps. The mouthpiece says 3C, no brand. It has kind of a large shank on it, different from the trumpet 3C I have. And I have to admit, I might have switched that MP with the one from the DEG mello, which was says "MELLO 6V."
  2. I'm the only person I know who actually liked Blue Devils 1988, the "black and gray" Blue Devils with the shiny gray prom shoes. I do admit the uniforms were not effective from a visual point of view from a distance, like in large venue stadiums. From close up, I thought they were classy, but that's just me. :) Unfortunately, nobody else. :(

  4. So I take it you voted for Cadets 2005?   5. If the horn looks nearly new, that's because it is. It was unused when I got it, and I can't play it. What a waste for a dumb drummer like me to have.
  6. If you don't mind me asking, are you going to march anywhere else? What are your feelings about marching somewhere else? I bet you represent the sentiments of a lot of people.
  7. Agree. What is the highest amount of titles in any category that any of the other people mentioned have?
  8. Between those two shows, Vanguard 1989. I remember at that time the talk was that the 1989 Vanguard show was the "best ever." The BD 86 and Garfield 1984 were also in that discussion at that time, to be considered "best ever." Garfield 1983 still gives me goosebumps. I also remember thinking at that time that BD 1988 was the best ever show, regardless of placement. There were also some UN-believable SCV shows that finished 2nd in the mid-80's that could also be right up there for best ever. It was a great era for drum corps.

What are you, a democrat? +++ I vote for Madison Scouts 1988 as the third best corps in 1988. +++ And for your information all of you guys who only saw Star of Indiana on tape and never saw them live, the 1990 show was not even Star's best 3rd place show. 1992 American Variations was a FANTASTIC show, could have won finals, maybe should have won finals and was one of the best shows of all time. +++ And if I have to be serious for a moment, the undefeated Blue Devils 1988 until finals week was possibly the best show of all time, bar none. Yeah, I saw it live. Yeah, it was really that good. They had those gray unis that year and I don't think their show played well to a large venue. From anything not the Rose Bowl the horn show was just perfect that year, especially when you could see them up close and personal. It was one of those "throw babies into the air" shows that you really had to be there to know just how great they were.
  10. I take it you didn't watch any drum corps live that year. I'm voting Madison '88 as the best THIRD place corps of all time.
  11. The auction is over. The seller didn't let it go for 50 bucks, reserve not met. That's probably a mistake, because that's about the going rate for those v/r horns, any condition. FYI there is now little supply and little demand for the 2v bugles. The 3v bugles are still holding their value pretty well, with average supply and high demand. A King 2v bugle, any condition, still is selling for lots, IF you can find one.
  12. With all due respect, your choice to leave out 1990 was a bad idea. BD and Phantom tied for 4th AND 5th. BD's Tommy was the all-time best 5th place corps. And people should also be able to vote for BD/PR 1990 for FOURTH place as well.
  13. Many of the others mentioned were great shows, but I can't remember a time when a 6th place corps was the absolute crowd favorite even over the eventual top three. Carolina Crown was that in 2007.
  14. Some people smarter than me have categorized DCI into "eras" of significant change and development, which obviously revolve around rules changes. Since music rules the roost, these eras focus on the changes in horns. 1972 - Early DCI 1977 - The two-valve years 1990 - the three-valve years 2000 - Any key era It would also be fair to say that 1983, the year the "tick" rule was eliminated and focus was changed to reward more creativity was the single most significant rule change ever.

  16. Hey, that is a FANTASTIC CD. The French horn ensemble is out of this world! It's all good. Nice heads-up on the CD, one of my favorites. :) +++ Edited: I just read the add, and according to their ad copy, BD has dropped the initial price of $9.95, scratched right through it, and now you can buy this GREAT CD for only NINE NINTY-FIVE! A bargain at half the price!
  17. I've got the Drum Corps World Jan. 1984 paper in my hand. "DCI Rules Congress makes changes for 1984 and 1985." Of course the news was pre-internet, so the rules were approved by the 1983 Drum Corps Rules Congress. Hitting the highlights: "the new system eliminates the 'tick' system in favor of a new subjective judging system." the penalty for chanting was eliminated. a rule extending all judging to the end of the corps performances was approved. In the past all execution judging ceased after 11 1/2 minutes. new judging criteria was approved, with new judging sheets. Lots of minutia here, but "the new brass captions field and ensemble brass, were used this past season." It continues: For ensemble visual, 'emphasis shall be on achievement of excellence by the ensemble, with respect to active demonstration of all aspects of visual presentation. Demand is inherent." Penalties for dropping equipment or retrieving it were dropped "A "desire to explore new avenues' led to elimination of the rule banning singing, chanting, talking or shouting by corps members. That clears the way for corps to continue the various grunts, groans and shouts used during some shows the last few years, and may even lead to some corps adding new ideas to their programs." +++ Other stuff: One reader is tired of the "Garfield" debate and whether they are really as good as SCV, Phantom or BD. Retiring Blue Devils director Jerry Seawright had an article and a pic in which he says thanks. Garfield Cadets select West Side Story for 1994. Jim Prime will be returning as arranger. Cavaliers add new staff Jim Campbell( perc) , Tim Guare (visual, right-hand man to Steve Brubaker) and Greg Cesario (CG, after working with Garfield in 1983). Apparently, Paiste paid tribute in their ad to the 4th place "Santa Clara Vanguards." (plural as quoted) And last, the "DCI records are the best ever." What the heck are "records?"
  18. Not a hijack of a thread. You have a point that there was a difference in the booing. BTW, I have also heard booing from the old days when Scouts were announced in any placement lower than 2nd, a booing of the judges. But I saw Star's show every year Star performed, and I saw them in the mid-west and East (I am from WV). First of all, they were NOT booed everywhere. The midwest crowds were by FAR the most rude, and I was a show where they were booed. It was embarrassing. Eastern crowds did NOT treat Star the same way. And Star was not booed in the early years. You are correct that the drum corps snobs/elitists were jealous of Star's immediate success and there was a huge misconception of how the money was spent but they were only booed in their "controversial" year of 1993 (Medea). They were certainly NOT booed in their fantastic "American Variations" show from the year before, 1992. Just a view from the stands, from someone who was there. Edited: I should also point out, that in the Cadets shows that had narration and were controversial they were not booed everywhere. CLARIFICATION: It's NOT that the Cadets were "controversial", that word is not accurate. The Cadets used NARRATION and I can assure you some people didn't like it, and THAT is why they booed. Geez, SCV was "contraversial" in 1980 and nobody booed them! In any case, only idiots boo at drum corps shows. And idiots at drum corps shows who show what buttheads they are is NOTHING new.

  20. Ding ding ding! "Phantom Voices." I heard Phantom several times that year. Early in the season I heard that passage played as a solo mello, then a week later they played the same thing but this time with the entire mellophone section (with more volume). It sounded fantastic, but a week later they switched back to the solo mello guy, and the rest is drum corps history. +++ Despite my fondness for that passage, for pure emotion the first time I heard it and everytime after, I really loved the 1983 Garfield Cadets mello solo near the end, played by the girl with one hand. You can't understand from the recordings how fantastic that section was when heard live, you had to be there. The beautiful sonorous sound simply resonated throughout EVERYONE in the stadium, no matter where you sat. I heard it ten times that season, from their first show in June to their last performance run-through in the Orange Bowl AFTER they won finals. It was perfect every time.
  21. Don't you drum corps people have "all days" and "move-in days", something to that effect? And I haven't heard "run through" yet. Certainly nobody out side drum corps would certain know what "Bones" is, or what a Z-pull is. Heck, nobody outside drum corps even know what "Phantom Regiment" is.
  22. Starting a drum corps is what many of us dream of, but have never had the courage to do, including myself. If you're saying you've done that, then you indeed have my respect, sir!
  23. If you missed the vote and everybody else voted one way, that would indeed be a unanimous vote. It seems you disagree with the vote, which is certainly your right, and I will speak for myself when I say I respect your right to do so. I've read everything Sam has written across three threads on two different boards. I haven't heard him "slam" DCI, not even once. Perhaps you are confusing what some other people have said, who do slam DCI. But then, to some, you don't need a reason to slam DCI. Some people are just haters. We can't have a discussion with folks like that. +++ I would like to say I've "known" Sam for several years through these discussion boards. He has done what I bet NOBODY else here has done; he's put his money where his mouth (and heart) is, he has started up TWO drum corps! By his actions, Sam has EARNED the right to make decisions in the best interest of his corps and the people who want to march with him. Even still, I have NEVER heard Sam be a dictator. Even though it's obvious he knows the right thing to do (that's called leadership) he still defers and communicates, and gives his power to the people he works with, by agreeing to abide by decisions of the group. You don't find that very often in life, much less in drum corps. Sam, I live in West Virginia so I can't get there, but if I could I would be PROUD to be a member of En Guarde. I would march for you, and I would work for you, because you're doing the right thing, and for the right reasons. Good luck my friend. -Dave St. Clair
  24. I saw Cavaliers a couple of years ago warm down as a group with pedal tones, very long, long, very soft, as soft as they could possibly go for about 5 minutes. Then the director had them go to the food truck to get ice to ice down their lips.
  25. This is a 30 year-old brand new Deg Dynasty II Alto horn, never been played. I have never seen another one like it. Note the HUGE tubing on the Deg as it rounds the back of the horn just before it turns to go to the bell. The bell is also HUGE, much larger than a flugal or sop. This horn is shorter than any other bugle I've ever seen. It is very comparable in size to a Conn cornet I used to have.
