What have you done for the activity?
Sam98 replied to tradition's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
Hear, hear. At one time the activity was centered on getting people in the community to participate in something you didn't necessarily need prior musical training for--and competitions were more about rivalries and bragging rights than about operating dollars and opportunities for corporate sponsorship. These days the junior drum and bugle corps experience is more for music and dance majors, not so much the kid off the street looking for a positive direction. I'm with you, 69Cadet--mine is not a very popular opinion either, but there you go. What have I done for the activity? What I can afford monetarily and time-wise--tickets, dvd purchases--hell, maybe I'll even see if Southwind needs some help if they are able to field a corps next year--but my motivation to do so is waning as the junior activity continues to morph into something no longer recognizable. -

Economy and Drum Corps revisited
Sam98 replied to Newseditor44's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Echoing what someone said earlier, I like the idea of corps scaling back--use only one flag. Leave the electronics off the field this year. Use last year's uniforms. Don't employ 40 guard technicians. Yeah, it's art, but at the base level it's about marching, playing and performing. There's got to be ways to cut back and still give the kids a great summer experience. -
Amen to that.

Six Flags pulled out a couple years back--it's back to Elitch Gardens again.

Used to live in Denver--Casa Bonita is an absolute dump, horrible food--the only locals who go there are school field trips because the food is cheap and fast.

Tiny, but interesting things you've seen.
Sam98 replied to DrinkinOuttaCups's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
And from the same DVD, something not so tiny--the final rifle exchange at the end of 27th's show. OUCH!! -
Hello all, In the DC General Discussion there's an interesting thread concerning weight being a factor for getting a guard spot (and some horn/drum spots) in a top 12 corps. I'd like to hear some commentary from the guard people on this forum--CGP's own Byline was representing well but most of the opinions seem to be from personnel outside the guard realm. Thoughts, anyone? http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...howtopic=121658

Shows you would like to see done...
Sam98 replied to OdeToArsenal47's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
"Variations on a Korean Folk Song"--yeah, yeah, Cavaliers did part of it a couple of years running but I'd like to see and hear the entire piece, not just the adagio and allegro sections. -
What were your favorite DCI guard flags?
Sam98 replied to Michael Boo's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Old school, but anyway... 27th Lancers--79-82: those striped and "toothed" flags always look so cool when spun, especially as double flags. North Star--78-79: the silver-mylar/plastic strip flags used during the 78 "Star Wars" opener and used in the 79 "Beach Boys" closer. Star of Indiana--88: love love love the flags they used that year--particularly the ones used during the "Can't Sit Down" overture; to me they look like stained glass. -
1979 is one of my favorite years--Troopers, Cavies, North Star...Madison was on fire that year. And 27th Lancers--best rifle line, hands down.

Having only seen this show via videotape and never live, it took me years to figure out that the girls had clarinets painted white during that section!

I've always maintained that, in my opinion, Garfield could have won a 4th title if they had a) used a bigger, traditional guard and b) another couple of weeks to clean. To me, this is one of their underrated shows.

Phantom Regiment Chooses Jupiter
Sam98 replied to JohnDonovanDotBiz's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Darn--I was hoping that the thread title meant that PR was going with a Holst show this year... -
What was that all about?

So Star's membership is only open to alumni? The reason I ask is that 27 opened up their 1994 ranks to people who were not 27 alumni to give people who always wanted to be a Lancer a one-shot deal at doing so. It would be very cool if Star would do the same (and especially considering that I'm only a couple of hours away from Bloomington, hint hint).

On the Waterfront! Yes!!!!

When did guards go co-ed?
Sam98 replied to funcorpsagain's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
A guy in Guardsmen in 1979? Wow, I'm shocked--I had no idea. The first time I remember a co-ed guard was either Spirit or Freelancers, both in 1983. -
Yeah, I have this show on videotape somewhere--they cut somebody's arm off at the beginning, and the guard captain holds up a severed head at the end...
-
Old school, but Skylarks' 1983 show is pretty weird.

"Alternative weapons for guard; has any guard every carried bow and arrow?" Star '91 used something in their opener that I think was supposed to be a shield but sure looked like a bow and arrow.
