  1. It is how to have longevity in this activity. It's a bit funny how some will mention the icons no longer with us and their style of the past but seem to never think or believe that in 2023 that those same people wouldn't have been a driving force or adapted to trends or evolution of the activity. IMO not only they would have , they would have pushed hard to explore, challenge and certainly push the envelope, just as they did in the 70s 80s 90s and so on.
  2. Oddly enough, many of the icons of our activity , ( many still around and active ) , do not have that mentality and it's one main reason they weathered through decades and some very much relevant still.
  3. AS hard as telling someone ( especially young ) no cell phones for 3 months, no computers and social media, etc. in 2023
  4. Yep! Not only can't control what the judges will do BUT what other corps will or won't do. It can be heartbreaking to improve so much and not move , or worse drop BUT as in any competition it's not just about you but those others also playing the game. Sometimes as a director or staff person it can be the hardest thing to get across to a hard working member.
  5. The nature of competition. How many non finalists improve by leaps and bounds and still don't make finals. It's never is just about how well you improve as a corps BUT has someone In front of you slipped or didn't improve at the same rate. The best anyone can do is just do their best, make the right decisions, timing of progression, set you members up for success and I have found over decades, set your own goals for success not what others think you should be. Focus on you!
  6. They are the true talent and hero"s and worth their weight in gold. Great design is worthless without being clean and knowing the importance of technique.
  7. They always " Think" they are doing what's best on all ends,NOW , if it actually is or not can be another story and depends who you talk to. As far as personal gain IF something is not successful, there is no personal gain, many learned that over the years the hard way. A good designer, director, staff person should know their job is to make their members shine and look the best they can,no matter placement .I believe it's a winning formula for all involved.
  8. either way ,good or bad it still comes down to their decisions. I have a landscaper otherwise mine would suck too.🙃lol
  9. IMO it's a pretty simple question to answer, Corps will decide when the line has been crossed Corps will decide when enough is enough Corps will decide when if it's time to revert back to a more controlled time Corps will decide " How " they will be judged Corps will decide everything moving forward and in what way ( the good or bad of that ) So basically " Corps will always decide " like I said the good or bad of it " I know there are some that don't like that answer sometimes BUT that pretty much is the bottom line. BUT you do have a nice lawn....lol
  10. An early 80s musical by Stephen Sondheim 🙂
  11. dozens of great shows...underrated? I loved 2011. I got to see it many times on tour that year, grew on me more and more.
  12. There was another corps who had the same rep. Now luckily for them they after decades got that in check and alumni involved now seem to know their role and the corps shot into finals and then top 1/2
  13. I knew I wasn't clear...so sorry.. I meant in a broader sense. WGI as in Winter Guard International...Percussion? Should the name be more general?
  14. This...................................hopefully its different now....Scouts need to be a force again...and can be!
  15. Sadly it is true at least from potential staff. Maybe it's changed now though. There was another corps with the exact rep. who seem to get it together in recent years and turned things around and seems to no longer have that stigma
  16. Well rest assure if there were it would be changed in a hot second. This I know for a fact
  17. and as I said before if the corps dont like it the corps change it. Until then...........
  18. Wasn't going to get back in this conversation but : You're right and it is. With that said, when corps feel anything doesn't fit their mission, judging or anything else corps will make the change. Exactly why DCI was formed to begin with.
  19. Yes and no, I am saying single moments do not determine and outcome and yet "IF" all things are even they could .
  20. you are clearly dug in on and upset over the WGI fall but refuse to take into consideration that when a judge comes up with a number it isnt 1 thing that determines that AND the fact we are only working with a certain amount of numbers. If you think numbers don't mean anything thats ok, you are entitled but those of us who do or understand how determination can be made are also entitled. Agree to disagree I guess and move forward. I guess until the next example comes up....and it will..lol Maybe to some degree you are right, numbers arent the end all but getting the right group in the right place does which is how the numbers are used. That make more sense?
  21. I cant explain it any better, others have also tried. Its something you are dug in on and won't accept it. So time to move on I think. I am not devaluing your opinion but many have offered their opinions on why and it is your choice to accept or not . As far as the numbers, the 20 could be 50 and still have those same issues. You also said the other group executed as well, well that would be your opinion, obviously the judge felt different.
  22. This is factually correct and has been for decades
