  1. This. It is deceptive to the judges and to the fans. When you see one corps go out and set a microphone up every 5 yards across the front sideline, it's intended to create an illusion that something is there that really isn't. No "range of field" mics, and put a limit to the number of individual mics used.
  2. All this, plus the new Women of DCI movement that was given - among other things - meeting rooms in LOS, meeting times, meetings at other Regionals, suites, etc.
  3. It was in place when I got here. This is my 16th year. I would even say "MOST" of the competitive groups in my state/area don't stay after halftime. Why? Multiple reasons. Halftime is our dress rehearsal. Our show is on Saturday - the thing we've put all our time and money into. We are putting our kids at a disadvantage when they have to be the first one in the building and the last ones out for a football game - and then get up at 5:30am the next day for our REAL competition. Plus, I actually encourage my kids to change out of uniform and go sit with their friends and watch the game. I think that's important for them too. But then they don't have to - again - be the last ones out of the building. There are times we stay for the whole game - if we have a late contest on Saturday, or Homecoming, we let the Seniors vote each year on staying the whole game on Senior night. Plus - we are working on show music during class and don't have time to work up Louie Louie. It's not negative at all, and my AD and principal are fine with it just like the other schools around. Hell, the AD is happy that hungry Band kids visit the concession stand after they change.
  4. That may be true, but look at Genesis for your example. And of course 'art' will change in 20 years. But right now, you do what's avant garde or you don't get rewarded. There's too much money and time on the line to be stubborn.
  5. Surely I do believe it. Go watch a show from the 80s and 90s. Watch a DCI (or good high school) show from today. There are built-in 'down' moments, but there's always something going on during those moments - we joke (not joke) that the transitions in your show are more important than the actual substance anymore because it's all that seems to make it on the tapes. All this being said - my favorite show of all time is Madison 1995 because of the out-of-control fan reaction at the end of Malaga, the fact that when I first saw the PBS broadcast (first corps I had ever seen, didn't know what DCI was), I couldn't hear the show at the end because of the audience. But it's a different game now.
  6. That wasn't the question. As a band director myself, it's THE thing and in order to play the game I go along with it. It works, and it's artistic. Which - for top programs - is what we're going for these days. Many competitive band programs don't even stay for the rest of the football game after the halftime show anymore. We don't.
  7. I find it interesting taking new people to shows. They don't know or understand the concept that the "best" corps always get to go last and just enjoy the shows for what they are. Fun to see a different perspective. I wish we would change the performance order schtick, personally. I'd LOVE to see a DCI Prelims on Thursday where it's a completely open, random draw. If that means Blue Devils perform at 2:10pm followed by Spartans and then Colts, so be it. It would be fun for fans.
  8. Shows have changed. There used to be literally 6-8 seconds of nothing built in between 4 separate pieces of the show. Now a show is one continuous thing. Most shows don't have 'applause moments' built in. Even (competitive) high school shows are now doing the same thing. It's one concept and one flow, and typically that flow isn't broken.
  9. Uh... that's what I think. I think, "screw that dude, I'm giving my money somewhere else." I know that's not the PC thing to say, but it's how I would treat the situation and you're not going to change my mind. Who cares, go somewhere else.
  10. I'm wondering what you're trying to achieve with this post. You show scores from past years, and use them against this year's scores, when a corps has been striving to achieve better scores in this caption. Since they now ARE, you're using their past scores to say everyone else is terrible? THEN - you also show this year's scores from multiple corps (from early July) and say that there's not one Box 5 score among them, when a Box 5 score = a total score of 90... so you're saying people should basically be scoring 90 in early July? ...or am I missing something here?
  11. This should tell you all you need to know about why "THEM AIN'T UNIFORMS THEM'S COSTUMES" is a non-issue to current Drum Corps.
  12. THEY WERE ALWAYS BANDS, JUST A SPECIAL KIND OF BAND CALLED A DRUM CORPS. SORRY I CANT FIND MY ANNOYING BOLD BUTTON SO I USED CAPSLOCK INSTEAD. Every Corvette is a car, but not every car is a Corvette. <<<<< found the Bold button
  13. As in the Cavaliers dubbing the vocal section over the ensemble?
  14. The speakers are miced The mics in front of the speakers are for the Audio on the live web and cinecasts. posted from the DrumScorps app
  15. This forum needs a better way to post images from a cell phone.
  16. See, some context is much appreciated. I didn't know what exactly was being referred to when "look at the prop" was said. That being said... very cool.
  17. Instead of saying "look at the prop" can you give some insight as to what it is you want us to be looking at and who is on the field?
  18. This is incorrect. Blue Stars 62.0 Phantom 64.0
  19. 1995. Madison was absolutely incredible. Cavaliers' program was impeccable (the double helix...) Cadets were fantastic. I am one who loved Blue Devils that year. Excellent Top 4! Vanguard, Phantom, et al were also fabulous!!
