  1. Hi guys, I have a question that I wanted to ask you all first before I talk to my corps director or the director at my mosque. I'm Muslim, and I also have plans to march this summer. Unfortunately, the drum corps season clashes with the Muslim's holy month of Ramadan, in which we fast for about 30 days from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan is expected to be from July 8th to August 7th, although the dates may vary slightly as the moon sighting determines the exact dates. The only reason I have put this question off for such a long time is that Muslims are exempt from fasting when they are traveling as long as they make it up later, and drum corps is pretty much constant traveling. But, I'm wondering if that exemption ruling still works if the traveling period extends over the entire month. Religion is also very important to me and my family and I would very much like it if I didn't have to miss out on fasting the whole month. My question is, are there any suggestions you guys may have on if there is anything I can do about this? Like, a way to march corps and fast during Ramadan at the same time? The last thing in the world I want to do is tell my corps that I can't march this summer. I know that there should be something possible, as many Olympic athletes fast as well as professional sports players. I still plan on talking to my corps director and the director at my mosque about this as well, just wanted to get a rough idea of what you guys think before I do so. Thanks!
  2. For those of us who weren't granted with perfect 20/20, how annoying is having to deal with visual correction on tour? Which do you prefer, contacts or glasses? Contacts can be great but often get dry during the day and can be a hassle to put on and take off everyday. Glasses can be more comfortable but might get in the way of things, and especially with a pair of sunglasses over them, can get quite clunky. Which do you think is better overall while on tour, or at least which sucks the least?

  6. Wow, that was a quick announcement given that the season ended just yesterday. I'm excited! Go Madison 2013 and congrats on 75 years of awesomeness!
  7. Funny story, (I know this should probably be in the Random Encounters thread, but eh) my sister-in-law who lives in Texas flew in to SoCal last night to visit our family and she said that on the plane she was sitting next to "a band person who was coming back after performing a show in Indiana." She said she tried talking to the girl and was like, "Yeah, my sister-in-law (me) really likes that too. I think her favorite is Santa Clara something..." Then she said that the girl got super excited and almost jumped out of her seat and said, "Oh! Vanguard?!" My sister-in-law felt bad because she had no idea what to talk to her about because no one in my family knows much about drum corps, and I told her that she should've asked where she marched, if she aged-out, what she played, etc. and my sis-in-law was like, "Isn't that getting a little too personal?!" Sigh
  8. Since I only got 2 out of 6 of my initial predictions correct for last year, I'm just going to make fewer predictions and preface them with the same comment. General predictions that very well may change in a few months: - SCV medaling - SCV taking percussion - Cavaliers in top 6 - Scouts in top 8
  9. Shoot, I love drum corps because it's the classiest activity in the whole world.

  11. Yeah I audibly said "Noooo!" when I saw that placement too. Wonder what was up?
  12. Way to go Vanguard! Congrats on breaking 90 tonight in Salem!
  13. Only 3?! Gah, way to be stingy drum corps genie. Can I just wish to be about 15 or 20 years older so I could've seen all the old-school stuff that was around when I wasn't alive? If I had to pick only 3, I guess I'll just pick one from each of my favorite corps. 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard 2008 Phantom Regiment 2002 The Cavaliers (in a perfect world, 1987 SCV, 1989 Cadets, 1995 Madison and some others would be on there too)
  14. Even though it's relatively recent, I think Phantom Regiment 2008 should go down as being revolutionary for story-telling in a drum corps setting.
  15. In no particular order: Santa Clara Vanguard (still need to see this show with the new ending though!) Phantom Regiment The Cadets Pacific Crest I haven't seen Madison's show yet, but I love the rep so I'm sure I'll add it to the list of favorites as well!
  16. Awww this is so adorable! Congratulations, and I hope everything works out with getting the stadium announcement!
  17. I was at It's a Grind one morning and I noticed that the barista was wearing a "Property of Blue Devils" or something or other shirt, and I asked him if he marched. Turns out he did march Blue Devils a couple years ago, aged-out just in 2010. He was actually really nice (not implying that BD people aren't nice, just saying he was nicer than your average barista! ), we struck up a little drum corps conversation and all that jazz. It's always nice seeing drum corps people in public and actually talking to them about it, it makes us fans not feel so arcane in our interests!
  18. Congrats to Regiment for an awesome performance tonight in Houston; this corps has definitely got their eyes on getting a medal this year and they're moving in the right direction to make that happen!
  19. I agree. The Cavaliers are an upper tier corps. Sure, they're not having as great a year as they usually do, but let's not forget that just last year they won the bronze medal and percussion trophy and it was only in 2006 that they had won the gold. I'm not a fan of how some are talking about The Cavaliers as if this year took them out of the "big boys" category. These are The Cavaliers we're talking about! One slow year doesn't ruin their history of being some of the biggest boys in this activity!
  20. Drum corps has definitely introduced me to a lot of different types of music, but one that I can think of right off the bat is opera, because of Turandot this year. I bought PR's selections from the opera itself, and I listen to them seriously all the time. It totally introduced me to other operas as well, and I could very well say now that I'm an opera fan! Another one is from SCV's ballad last year, The Eternal Knot. Good stuff! I really like that whole album, the celtic-y stuff is really cool in my opinion and I would never have known about it if it wasn't for The Devil's Staircase.
  21. Why can't it be, "...and I believe it is time for 'the leap.' By this I mean, someone, is going to place higher than most of us expected based on their performances thus far this season." Now I haven't been involved in this activity for as long as some other people on here, but it's been done yeah? Big shows where some corps place higher than others that have been beating them for the majority of the season? I think more corps are going to take "the leap" today than "the fall." My own mom thinks I'm a pessimistic person in general, but when it comes to drum corps I like to look on the bright side! (edit: not trying to make the OP feel bad or anything, for what it's worth I do agree that some corps will take the fall; didn't watch the show so not sure which ones)
