  1. I'm not too enthusiastic about this new ordinance, but perhaps it will sound really good and will surprise everyone.
  2. 2013: Troopers, Pacific Crest, Oregon Crusaders, Mandarins, Pioneer 2012: Glassmen, Academy, Pacific Crest, Colts, Jersey Surf 2011: Troopers, Academy, Pacific Crest, Cascades 2010: Academy, Spirit, Pacific Crest, Mandarins, Jersey Surf, Pioneer 2009: Colts, Mandarins 2008: Crossmen, Troopers, Academy I'm not as familiar with the pre-2008 non-finalist shows, but I also really enjoyed Southwind 2000.
  3. Pacific Crest 2014: "No Strings Attached" http://www.pacific-crest.org/2014/01/5890/
  4. Actually, it looks like the Walnut show has been changed to Citrus College in Glendora on 6/28. I'm excited about the line-up there because we normally get 4-5 world class corps there, but now we're getting seven (Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Knights, Crossmen (I haven't seen them in person yet), Pacific Crest, Mandarins, and the Academy).
  5. Pioneer announces 2014 program, "Joy!" http://pioneer-corps.org/news/569-pioneer-announces-2014-program-joy.html I really liked their show last summer, so I'm glad they're continuing with this genre.
  6. This was posted on the Troopers Facebook page earlier today: "Of the people, by the people, for the people..." -Abraham Lincoln Troopers 2014
  7. I still noticed that these shows are unedited on the Fan Network though. Why would DCI edit the audio recordings and not the videos?
  8. Phantom Regiment "Into the Light," because it went so well with the theme, and it's one of the few endings that makes me teary-eyed.
  9. They're not listed in the bundle, but they're available for individual purchase.
  10. I purchased the bundle, but it seemed to be missing Boston Crusaders, Blue Devils, and the Academy. Did anyone else have this problem?
  11. The first show I saw was the 2007 Blue Knights at the Rose Bowl for Prelims. I was amazed by the visual precision and sound they were producing, and I was captivated throughout the entire program. However, I was there working at the Jolesch Booth for that day and semifinals, so I didn't get to see too much else. The first competition I bought a ticket for was Corps at the Crest Walnut in 2008, and I can still remember the sheer volume of Vanguard's first impact of their show. I've gone to the Walnut show every year since.
  12. Right now, I'll guess: 1. Blue Devils 2. Santa Clara Vanguard 3. Carolina Crown However, I'd like to see the Bluecoats take it next year because now they're the best corps to have not won DCI yet.
  13. Crown - 13 Blue Devils - 12 Cadets - 12 (in the minority here) Santa Clara Vanguard - 13 Bluecoats - tie Phantom Regiment - 13 (also in the minority here) Cavaliers - 13 (not by much though) Boston Crusaders - 13 Madison Scouts - 13 Blue Knights - 12 Spirit of Atlanta - 13 Blue Stars - 13 Troopers - 13 Crossmen - 12 Colts - 12 Pacific Crest - tie Oregon Crusaders - 13 Mandarins - 13 Academy - 12 Jersey Surf - 12 (this one was close) Cascades - 13 Pioneer - 13
  14. 25. I saw my first drum corps show at the Rose Bowl in 2007 and I've been a fan ever since. However, being a clarinet player, I never marched and missed my age-out in 2009.
  15. I thought the Mandarins used narration very effectively this year.
  16. 1. Carolina Crown - Overall, the show is exciting, emotional, clever, and cerebral. Basically, it has just about everything I could want in a drum corps show. Their percussion feature is my favorite one this year, and the silence before the following brass impact is extremely effective. However, I'm still not entirely sold on the ending yet, I think it needs more velocity. I also think the counting adds a lot to the show, and it's really cool when it's syncopated in the percussion feature. 2. Phantom Regiment - This show is underrated; it's also emotionally captivating (musically speaking) as well as exciting. The music and drill design choices are really smart (they just have to close that book eventually). Nimrod is one of my favorite all-time compositions, and though their rendition of it is really beautiful, I feel it gets a bit "notey" at times. I think it might be more effective if someone actually dressed up as the evil queen because the puppet itself is a little underwhelming. 3. Santa Clara Vanguard - Their arrangement of Les Mis is actually more successful to me than the Cadets' 1989 version. This show has so much heart and power, the impact in "I Dreamed a Dream" is a deluge of emotional force. The corps performing behind the barricade is also very effective during "Bring Him Home." However, I think the drill, as great as it is, is too self-referencing; I get bored of the logo by the end of the show. My favorite moment of drill would be where the four circles collapse into the oval.
  17. The Cadet's show is really starting to grow on me, there's this nice cerebral yet haunting quality about it.
  18. The improvement's getting really noticeable for the Cavaliers, keep it up!
  19. I actually liked the Troopers' and Academy's shows this year. They both do a terrific job of taking you into their worlds and giving you shows you won't forget. The Troopers' show had a high emotional aesthetic complete with tradition, and Academy's was over-the-top and unpredictable. I'm really looking forward to the rest of tonight's show!
  20. All Scores: Carolina Crown- 81.85 Blue Devils- 80.95 Pacific Crest- 70.3 Mandarins- 67.9 Gold- 68.3 Impulse- 62.9 City Sound- 53.35 SoCal Dream- 61.25
  21. As much as I would like to see it happen, I don't think PC will be finalists this year. However, I think they'll be in the top 15 and we'll see their whole show at the Big, Loud, and Live event this year.
  22. Photos I took at the show: https://www.facebook.com/matthew.allan.31/posts/10200705759981083 I enjoyed the entirety of world class tonight, but I don't think I'll ever forget Crown's first impact; they basically peeled my face right off!
  23. I wonder if these scores are just a little inflated; Pacific Crest is 0.15 higher than Boston Crusaders. I know they were at different shows, but that's still pretty crazy.
  24. I think there are quite a few shows this year that I see a lot of potential for me to love by August. I haven't seen all the WC shows yet, but these ones stick out to me the most so far... Carolina Crown Phantom Regiment Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Knights (though I'm not crazy about the opening monologue) Spirit of Atlanta Academy Mandarins
  25. I GOT IT (sorry if I seem over-excited)! All I did was click on the gray "Home" tab and click on the video again. Now, I'm off to watch some drum corps...
