  1. Only 300 ! wow, indeed. and this point in itself never caused people to ask why, and then make changes? I suppose if you have no ability to gain control, you must sit on the sidelines and wait. Years of frustration. Any parties scheduled over the next 5 days? I can't imagine the relief.
  2. I have been told I have a flair for the obvious. I think we are seeing just how much the organization was crippled by Hop. I'm sure they'll proceed eventually working through a financial review/audit. Behaviors such as complete control, lack of separation of duties, never taking vacations, are all markers for possible fraud/embezzlement.
  3. They run fingerprints so it would not work for those who leave discreetly. Reporting is just up the chain of command, or around it if needed. If DCI wants to know the truth, they'll install a whistleblower contact phone/email.
  4. I think it would be interesting to see timelines of when these policies were created for each of the corps that has them as well as the home office. Many people have stated something along the lines of, "I'm surprised it is just now coming to light." I wonder how many policies were in place before 2017. I've worked with local high school drum lines for a few years now. I had to pass background checks, and sign a form each year understanding the rules. In this school district there is also mandatory reporting. Of course, this is more developed in academic institutions because there have been so many previous incidents. It really tears up the programs for a while. I do remember thinking, "I wonder if they do this in drum corps these days."
  5. Yes, I can see that for sure. I posted directly because I thought each of you had points.
  6. Dan Acheson, executive director and CEO of Drum Corps International, told IndyStar he was deeply concerned and first learned of the allegations when the article published. The organization is conducting an internal review to learn whether any employees knew of the allegations but failed to report them. It's also reviewing policies and procedures around reporting abuse, Acheson said. The employee handbook contains directions for Drum Corps International employees on how to report allegations, Acheson said. But now, the organization is reviewing how to create a similar process for those outside who are involved in drum corps groups, such as participants, their families or directors. "We're making sure we have all of the right mechanisms in place," Acheson said. "We are taking this very seriously." -----------------And then further down _______________________ Drum Corps International also is reviewing policies related to ensuring compliance with best practices and laws around reporting abuse for participating groups, Acheson said. Participating groups that fail to meet Drum Corps International's policies can lead to that group's dismissal. The organization also is in contact with Youth Education in the Arts, Acheson said.
  7. What do you think are the positives and negatives for the Cadets by starting tour in California? I hope the members really enjoy being out there - I think it will be positive for them to get early reads on the show.
  8. I realize I'm bringing in a BD reference, but it relates to old school rifle squads... There is a picture of a line of BD rifles, with Lee Doebler in front, and the rifles are frozen mid-toss in a perfect vertical line, and I think even their hand positions during the toss were also identical. It is a fabulous photo. Anyone from that time says, "Yes! That's it! That's what it is supposed to look like!" They spent hours perfecting spin timing and every angle.
  9. Two Trooper moves I always loved: the sunburst, and the rifle toss-across with someone in the middle of the circle.
  10. Yes, it was me. Rick gave us the parts in chunks over the course of a few months. Sometime during the year, I wrote out the whole part. I did the same for 77 since the only change was the 2nd movement. Years later, I found it in a box. It was pretty messed up so I wrote out a new clean copy - I think that was in 2011. I sent it to Rick and all the guys as a 35 yr anniversary present. FYI - I did the same thing as you with learning snare parts...only I was captivated with Santa Clara 1972 -1975. To be honest, I'm surprised I didn't try out there since it was actually closer to my house than Concord. I went to my first practice for BD and instantly felt like it "fit", so I never made it to SC. Funny thing is, I moved in with BD guys who lived in San Jose. We commuted to practice in Silverstein's VW bus. Great times, for sure!
  11. 1976. Playing in the snare line for the Blue Devils was a complete gas. I enjoyed every rehearsal from October - June. I got to travel to the other side of the country during the summer on our "new" buses - 1957 Greyhound SceniCruisers... yeah baby! We had no food truck. We had cereal for breakfast, peanut butter/jelly and/or bologna and cheese sandwiches for lunch, and fast food for dinners. Loved Stillwater, Whitewater, World Open at the Manning Bowl (saw Muchachos for the first time), and CYO - where we did a great drum show even though we arrived about 7 mins before report time due to the equipment truck being too tall to fit under an overpass... Everyone threw on their uniforms, and we played one exercise one time through and hustled on to the field. Stillwater - The drum line is warming up and a crowd starts to gather. I had never seen this before. There were probably 75 or so people. I marched between fellow BD rookie Scott Johnson and 3 year snare vet Alan Silverstein. I turned my head to the right and asked Alan, "What are all those people doing?" "Watching us," he answers. Then I said, "But why? We are just playing basic warm-up exercises." And he says, "Because we're good!" Me, "Oh, okay. That's kind'a weird." I know, pretty much clueless! That whole year, ending by winning BD's 1st championship was absolutely incredible.
  12. We need "restrictor plate" drum corps contests.
  13. Did Garfield ever do Maynard's - Star Trek?
  14. West Coast would be nothing without these....
  15. Could they add a DCP portion to the scoring.... Thread View Analysis, or would it be Thread View Performance?
  16. GREAT video! Very cool tricks - impressive. (to a drum guy)
  17. Our local HS does special honors - cancer survivors, 8th grade night, Senior night, etc. pre-game. Both bands play at halftime. Homecoming is done at halftime at all the schools in the county, and both bands run through their shows after the game.
  18. I've not heard that term before. Sounds scary. Strother Martin: "What we have here is failure to remunerate." ($1 to Jim Varney)
  19. What is a boogaloo? How does an electronics style boogaloo relate to G7?
