  1. Based on reviewing the entire propsal in detail, I think the answer is: Because the "non-elite" corps don't fit into the model proposed by the G7. In their model, the G7 events are to be marketed and delivered as "Super Awesome Summer Band," basically HS band performed at higher level. In their view, why would HS students want to come to show if the corps/bands were barely as good (or even worse than) an average HS marching band? The G7 philosophy appears to be that HS bands now fill the role formerly performed by smaller, regional, "feeder" drum corps. In this model, DCI should be viewed as an extension of (or a higher level of) HS marching band. I got the sense that the G7 view the non-elite (especially the low World Class and Open Class corps) as...I am honestly trying to think of a different word than "embarrassing," because I'm not sure that's fair...but I think they view those corps as diluting the DCI product and brand. They think that if HS kids show up to see "Super Bands" and their first impression is one the lower corps, they will have a less positive view of DCI overall. There is some truth in all this, but I can't say I like it.
  2. I honestly thought this poll was going to be "which of these corps are you most disappointed in for taking part in the G7 proposal." My vote would have been SCV. You can try to justify the G7 proposal by economics, sustainability, etc., but one thing you certainly cannot call it is "classy."
  3. Can we stop with the "just a proposal" crap? That is irrelevant and ignores the issue. Suppose President Obama's chief of staff announced a new exciting proposal for helping all Americans by abolishing Congress and the Supreme Court, and "insourcing" those duties to the Executive Branch, to save money and make government more efficient (which it would, by the way). Should this not bother people because it's "just a proposal"? Should people wait to get angry until a change is actually implemented?
  4. As much as I would love to see it happen again (living in San Jose), it's too much of a burden for the corps and the members.
  5. I'm feeling claustrophobic just looking at that.
  6. I would rather Scouts march 16 tubas and keep 4 plates
  7. You'll need a thesis, ie a theme. It shouldn't just be "lots of corps have played Bernstein." Why do you think Bernstein has been so popular in marching music? What is it about his music that has made it so popular in this activity?
  8. Did I miss something? Has someone actually proposed adding woodwinds to DCI?
  9. Wrong. Ticks were done away with to encourage corps to present more creative, challening, entertaining shows. A lot of the same people that complain that today's shows lack the emotion/entertainment of BITD also bemoan the loss of the tick system. This is not logical. The audience does not care about "ticks." They want to be entertained.
  10. You were "going to be a fan of CC" but now you're not, since they entered into a contest to win a $1,000,000 grant to further music education in their community? Really? Really?
  11. I wish I had your free time and disposable income. Should be a great summer!
  12. These are all great shows, of course, so it comes down to personal preference. 1. Frameworks (jaw-dropping visual & amazingly mature brass sound) 2. Cadets 2000 (GE, GE and more GE!) 3. Phantom 2008 (emotion and execution!)
  13. WOW!! Great vid! Awesome content, and very professionally edited and put together. It's amazing to the see the level of talent and polish that auditionees have these days before they've marched a day of drum corps.
  14. I love/hate all the holdovers/blown releases. (Is it really a "blown" release if it's done on purpose?) Leads me to think about "real world" examples. One that comes to mind is 2003 Cadets, at the end of Malaguena. How do the corps treat this? Is it accepted or frowned upon?
  15. So...the top 24 include 7 Phantom shows but 0 Blue Devils shows?
  16. I say yes. I am a traditionalist, which means no Trumpet Christmas until after Thanksgiving.
  17. Awesome. I think this is a great direction for SCV. Based on the current trend, it feels to me like the model is: 1. Re-establish SCV's identity as #1 IN CLASS AND TRADITION. 2. Choose great, established music. 3. Try to keep the arrangement true to the original while still putting on a fantastic and entertaining drum corps show. 4. Corollary to #3: Don't chop up the source music and re-arrange it into something barely recognizable. 5. Don't try to be too cutting edge or esoteric. Favor tradition over innovation. 6. Listen to the judges but design for the fans. Can't wait to see it!
  18. I'm 99.9% sure Boston was using matched in the mid 80s.
  19. I recall going to a show in '84 and seeing Cadets playing matched (as did most of the lines that day). 27 played traditional. Which I remember because they stood out among the rest of the matched lines. They also won drums that day. 27 had a great drum line that year.
