  1. No lie- If (in my unbiased opinion) all the people (especially those who weren't at Arrowhead for DCI semis in 1988) had seen or heard that performance... I wish that the CD's and fan network ran that nights run. Best performance of my drum corps life, along with 127 good guys!
  2. I agree- I would have never thought that the outside approach would work for Madison, but watching John Lee, seeing him in rehearsal, talking to the members, and meeting him face to face...he was certainly the drum major of the 2010 Madison Scouts.
  3. Yes, but... My DM (Mr. Dan Feeny, esq) was much more than the "conductor" of the Madison Scouts- he was the marching member #1- liason between the staff and the corps. When someone needed encouraging, he was the one. When someone needed berating, still FanDeeny. The one making sure everything was clean before we left a school? DM. The one to eat peanut butter because the taco salad was gone? Yet again, DM. Not a job I would want, but I'm happy to say that I played for one of the greats (as well as all the legendary drum majors in the Madison Alumni Corps). I think that is what the OP is asking- is the DM of today just responsible for conducting, or is it still the job that us dinos remember?
  4. You should call him "the Dude", you know... p.s. he prefers Sioux City sasparilla...
  5. Correct me if I'm wrong- didn't Garfield have the first completely grounded melodic ensemble (bells, xylo, vibes, marimba and timps) in '81? Then, in '82, everyone used grounded instruments, but on the field, with the "pit" being created in '83. Man, that 27 timp line could play, no?
  6. ommm...chuckandthurston...ommm...chuckandthurston...ommm...chuckandthurston... or, Chuck and Chris Thompson!
  7. I, Sir, marched in the (solidly last place in polls of best Madison shows of the 1990's) 1990 Madison Scouts. I own an original Lemon Squeeze shirt with the 2 valve sop, and an I Can Cook Too shirt with Jeff Spanos playing snare drum with spatulas. Are you seriously the first person in history saying that the Madison Scouts should revisit the 1990 show........... .........Without including Remembrance? You Sir, need a beer. I'll buy you one sometime!
  8. First thought- Madison '88 out of the drum solo: "set up at the battle axes"
  9. Ummm... Jeff, you forgot one (You shouldn't have- you were there). 2006 MSARP! in all seriousness- 2001 2010 2005 my fave of the next 10 years? 2011 I hope!
  10. Little Jeffrey= the Jar Jar Binks of drum corps

  12. Forgive me if I'm missing something, but I can't find an exact schedule for the theatre broadcast for each corps. I see the performance order, but am curious about the performance time for each corps, as well as our favorite- INT! thanks in advance!
  13. I drove out of my way to go back to Minonk a few years ago- yes, that nasty water really was that bad.
  14. Thanks for making me feel old. Really Really Old. Saw some Scouts hanging out in KC yesterday- I tried to give them some tips of things to do downtown, and I hope they had fun. ...but KC won't ever top the fun of our '88 free days- Hamlin, Amsterdam, London, New Orleans...
  15. I was at the run through this afternoon- looking good! I called a friend of mine who has an 18 y.o. superstar low brass playing son- he filled the euph hole and leaves on tour tomorrow! aah, to be young again!
  16. Anybody know what is up with rehearsals in Kansas City Sunday afternoon/evening? The FB page says rehearsal 1:30-10:00 pm, with a Tuesday free day. I'm hearing from the host band director that the free day is Sunday. Bill! You out there?
  17. for me? always, snare high. toms down in perfect fourths on the top heads bottom heads up a minor third from the tops (gives a cool overtone and downward bend). On a 5 piece, that's the "Star Trek" interval. Just me!
  18. Just stuff I saw.. '84 BD '85 Madison '87 VK '90 Star '91 BD '95 Cavaliers '99 SCV '99 Madison
  19. In my good old days the Madison Scouts had one motto above all others: If Something Is Going To Go Wrong, It Will Go Wrong In Ohio. wheel falls off bus? Ohio salmonella? Ohio cold dirty roachy showers? Ohio I still don't trust Ohio.
  20. Several posters had the same thought as me: July 4th parade in Evanston IL- I heard a drumline coming well before I could see them. All I could hear was a snare line and a bottom bass at first, and I looked at my wife and said "Cavaliers." They sounded great up close. 5 toms, 5 basses, 9 loud as he"" snares...on mylar (and short shells). Why not try? Star existed almost exclusively in the kevlar era, yet marched mylar several times for the sound...
  21. Beatrix? Looks pretty recent from the wheels on the pit...
  22. Easy solution- just use the starting time for scores Racine Scouts 61.5 Colt Cadets 63.2 Pioneer 64.9 Colts 70.6 Blue Stars 72.3 The Cavaliers 74.0 The Cadets 75.7 Govenaires 81.4 Wow! great score Pio. Better Every Day! Nice surge Red Team! Top 3 fall back a bit, but still close in score. Govies are gonna win DCI! fixed.
  23. Hey now buster- we NEVER smoked unfiltered Lucky Strikes. Only unfiltered Camels. The one cig our pit instructor would refuse. Don't smoke, kids! Really!
