  1. Thank you Madison for your moving tribute to Dan Acheson tonight. MYNWA is always emotional, but in service of an alum and celebration of Dan's leadership over the years made it even more impactful. It was great to see you at Finals, but it would be even better to see you in Finals. I don't have any association with Madison aside from believing DCI is stronger with them in the top 12. For 2024 let's have an honest and passionate discussion about what the corps needs to do to get where we all want them to be, but the circular rantings of "snakes", "dictatorships", "tyrants" and "regimes" by some can take that echo chamber someplace else: it's not welcome here. 2024 Staff Announcement: TBD 2024 Tour Announcement: TBD 2024 Program Announcement: TBD

  4. Greetings! For about six months now I have hosted Sketchbook Podcast which focuses on creativity, preparation, & effort with artists, creators, & educators. Part 1 of the interview with Chris Komnick, executive director of the Madison Scouts, releases at midnight on April 13th. I fully realize that to many, Komnick and/or the Scouts tend to incite some polarizing posts and threads. But this episode is drum corps related and so I thought I would make sure to publicize here. Ep. 28, Part 1: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC) So that you have an idea of what exactly we talked about, here are the bullet points for Part 1: Personal Profile Life, Education, and career Komnick's path from marching member to executive director. Is drum corps too expensive? Increase in costs, where does the tuition go, & how much does member tuition actually cover. The effects of BAC assembling their "super group" of designers and staff in 2016 & the California Wage & Hour Laws on DCI. Have the two coasts altered the financial landscape of DCI? Does the cancellation of the 2020 season function as a "financial reset" for DCI? The timeline and process behind deciding to become gender-inclusive. To some, this may not seem we got too deep into DCI and/or the Madison Scouts. But I assure you that Part 2 will definitely focus on the highs and lows of the Madison Scouts. Part 2 will release later this week. Sketchbook Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, & wherever fine podcasts are downloaded. Ep. 28, Part 1: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC)

  6. Recently the Madison scouts released a survey regarding the future of the corps. The first big issue addressed on the survey is whether the corps should stay all male or go Co ed. The results of this survey will be used to lead the Scouts in the right direction according to the Board of Directors. what are your thoughts? please vote in the poll and comment! Below is the link to the survey https://goo.gl/forms/wWQ6eNmyOPfFgskw1

  9. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!
  10. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  11. Hi everyone, Welcome to the third edition of my match up series. In this edition, we will be looking at the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins. Looking back at the 2017 season, both corps accomplished many great things. The Madison Scouts pulled forward and made a return to finals after placing 13th at the 2016 DCI World Championships. They finished 12th in 2017 and changed their look for the first time since their founding by breaking away from the corps historical look. For the Mandarins, they had a successful season and finished 13th at the 2017 DCI World Championships. Throughout the 2017 season, the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins banged heads with each other and the competition got so intense that at almost every other competition, the corps would place right next to each other. There were some points in the season where the scouts would finish ahead of the mandarins at one competition and then at the very next competition, the mandarins would finish ahead of the Scouts. From all of this, it is very clear that the two corps are going to be battling it out again next season. Now, in the poll that is attached, please vote for who you think will score and finish higher!
  12. If you haven't heard (and if you're a drum corps fan, i don't know how you couldn't have), screenings of "Scouts Honor: Inside A Marching Brotherhood", the award-winning documentary filmed and recorded during the Scouts 2012 season, has started screenings across the country. If possible, can we pin this post so screening sponsors can list their events? I'll start... The Velvet Knights Alumni Corps is sponsoring the only Southern California screening of the award winning documentary, "Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood". The screening is scheduled for Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the Edwards Anaheim Hills 14 in Anaheim Hills, CA. TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE BY ADVANCE PURCHASE ONLY! THERE ARE NO WALK-UP TICKET SALES! Tickets are $10.50. To reserve tickets, go to: http://gathr.us/screening/9782 This is a fundraiser for the Velvet Knights Alumni Corps. But we need a minimum number of tickets sold to make this happen. Even when you pre-purchase you tickets, your credit card will NOT be charged until the minimum number of tickets are sold. Filmed over the course of the 2012 season and recorded in 5.1 Surround Sound, this theater event is the closest you'll come to hearing a drum corps show live. 13. This may be a short thread. As of a few minutes ago, I'm getting reports from the area it's raining pretty bad. We'll see and hope for the best. World Class Phantom Regiment - 9:02 Madison Scouts - 8:45 Mandarins - 8:28 INT - 7:58 Pacific Crest - 7:41 Open Class Genesis - 7:24 Shadow - 7:07 I assume all times are local -- CDT. [i wish fromthepressbox.com would make it a little easier to cut and paste from their site.]
  14. Venue: John D. Riggs Stadium 5:30 p.m. Box Office Open 7:30 p.m. Welcome & National Anthem 7:35 p.m. SoundSport 8:02 p.m. Watchmen - Riverside, CA 8:17 p.m. Intermission 8:35 p.m. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA 8:57 p.m. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI 9:19 p.m. The Academy - Tempe, AZ 9:41 p.m. DrumLine Battle Note: All times MST. From what I understand (after comparing times with the wife and checking online), Mesa AZ is on Standard Time. Anyone at the show?
  15. What an incredible show! Huge crowd, every Corps put forth a good show, and the weather cooled down in the evening. A perfect summer evening! Below are my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions. The talent level and performance of ALL corps is simply unreal - if anyone thinks Drum Corps is dying, well... you clearly aren't seeing what I am seeing. Wahoo! I didn't take notes, just writing from memory, so please forgive the lack of detail. Open Class Golden Empire - Bakersfield, CA -This Open Class corps is doing great things! I'm glad they are expanding their tour this year and hope they make it to championships next year. Blue Devils C - Concord, CA -Cute, Adorable. What else can you say? Blue Devils B - Concord, CA -Drumline is insane, rest of the show was good; I enjoyed it, but a lack of "wow moments" for me. Feels like the show has limited room to grow Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA -Great show! I had them slightly ahead of BDB tonight (just checked the scores, I was right!) I think this show has a lot of room to grow World Class Corps Mandarins - Sacramento, CA -They have been on a rise the past few years and continue that trend again this year. They have never looked or sounded this good, this early ever. A very special shout-out to the guard who is MILES ahead of previous years. The corps moves a lot this year which is an improvement from last year. I really wish they would stop using original music, which it is good, I feel like using relatable music might be the hook that pushes them up a few slots. I think they were better than Pacific Crest. It will be interesting to see where this show goes this year. The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. The show connects so well with the audience, I believe it will be a fan favorite all season. Not only is the show entertaining, it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. Unchained Melody was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire night. Huge crowd reaction! Call me crazy, but I think this show might be a dark horse to make finals. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA In the past, I feel like PC's show design has held this corps back - this year, I think it is much improved. Their show is called UNION and is about how the railroad connected America. I liked it, but I don't think there is enough there to propel the corps forward this year. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI Judas! This show had a,lot of power. Madison is starting very strong this year. Some good moments, especially when the crowd gets into the familiar music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Emotional show. Big step up this year for Madison. Very strong guard! Blue Devils - Concord, CA -The other surprise of the night (for me!) was that I enjoyed BD's show! They move A LOT. The guard spins A LOT. So much talent in this corps, especially the guard and drumline. I don't mean this as any kind of a knock, but I don't know if this show has the potential to win a championship. I feel like it's missing something to make it truly special. I fell like Bluecoats and Crown will be battling with BD all season. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA -I call this show Elegant Nature. Very beautiful show. I know nothing about pit, but WOW - the their feature beginning of the show is so pretty. The hornline is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. I think this show was so enjoyable to watch. Not that they went anywhere, but I feel like SCV is back! Blue Knights - Denver, CO -I love glitter, so therefore I liked this show :) They sounded beautiful. I don't want to sound crazy, but I think they might have one of the strongest horn lines in DCI. The guard was also great and their multi-colored flags were so pretty. Some of the vocal tracks seemed a little disjointed, but perhaps it will all make sense once the full show is on the field.Their show wasn't finished, so it was hard to get a firm feel for it, but wow - what a great show!
  16. We're happy to announce that the home video release for our award winning documentary, "Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood" is finally happening. Preorders for the DVD and the Ultimate Blu-ray Edition + DVD Combo Pack are now available on our website. The discs will ship in June, and these two versions of the film will be available for sale at the Madison Scouts souvie stand during the 2016 DCI tour. We've been blown away by the reactions to our film from both drum corps fans and from those who had previous never heard of the activity. Somehow we made the film work for both camps which was not an easy feat. Currently we have a user rating of 9.9 out of 10 stars on IMDb.com, which is pretty unheard of. There have been some very nice reviews written by people who've seen the film. If you preorder the home video version before May 31, 2016 you'll get free shipping on all orders within the USA. We are shipping the film internationally (not for free). Please note that the DVD is Region 1 and the Blu-ray is Region 0. There are no subtitles, and these are NTSC transfers. We've been making this movie on our own and we're self distributing it, therefore any boost we can get from the drum corps community is a giant help. Take a moment to share our movie trailer with your friends and let them know what you think about it. Thanks so much, Mac Smith Director/Producer - "Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood"
  17. Great night of drum corps! No rain, only a light wind, packed full house (arrive early, lots of folks with reserved tickets had trouble getting to their seats as everyone "spread" on the bleachers and some spots seemed to dissappear). This is the grass stadium where the MN Vikings have training camp, no track-grass right up to the bleachers-the crowd is so close some drum majors conduct from the stands. My hometown and most fav stadium to play in! Some totally biased thoughts from last night: (i have not seen much of anything live/video/etc for this season, have not even had time to read much) Govenaires: classic show for them, entertaining music choices and they performed the heck out of it. Contra (tuba?...I might be old...) solo with the gold flags is a great design choice. I suspect the closer has not been on the field long, but it is going to rock by August. MN Brass: this show is already looking polished-great guard coustuming and flags, loved the music. Great solo work in the hornline, everything looks and sounds like another DCA-sweep for MN this year :) RACINE SCOUTS: props to the 4 kids in the brass line (yep, 4). Of course there are balance issues with the full drumline and out, but they hung in and did a nice job in the ballad. Nice vocal solo, and the guard work that was ready for the show fit well. Horns were staged near the pit for most of the show. COLT CADETS: my kiddos-great job!!! Full show marching on the field, some guard works needs to be added in places yet. Big sound, then when the shakos come off you remember that many are only 12 years old...yikes! Members are very animated and selling the show, soloists did a great job, so proud of you guys! Pioneer: my vote for "most improved", but I have been out of the loop the past 2 years with the baby...anyway, wow! Big corps in all sections, lots of volume, entertaining show. The costumes and flags fit the theme great, it was easy to follow the story. They are not moving as fast or playing as many notes as the big guys, so I know they are not likely to hit top-15, but they should be very proud of this show. VIP to the cymbal line-lots of effects, good marching and visuals COLTS-Go Red Team! Love the show, set #3 grabbed the crowd great and the wall of sound on the first big hits got them roaring. Trumpet solos rocked, vocal solo was great, and lots of little details on the front sideline with pit and voice actors that added a lot (popcorn...lol...) I can't wait to see how the ending changes in the next few weeks. Narration was a bit hard to hear due to the stands so close to the pit, with speakers aimed right at the wall, but this stadium is unique, so it should not be an issue most other places. Love ya lots guys-keep up the great work! MADISON SCOUTS-love the 1990s uniforms, the whole show has the 90s feel with jazz and screaming sopranos (trumpets....). Big wall of sound was the loudest of the night. Fun, happy show. BLUECOATS-after reading a bit on this show before seeing it, I knew some things I wanted to watch for. I think they maybe the used the silver atom things more then in the first couple of shows, but I don't have any prior viewings to go on. Guard was in and on them quiet a bit, they moved around, etc. The speaker effects are very cool, I loved the muted trumpets being bounced around the field. We were sitting right on the 50, so the best possible listening point. I hope folks further out near the end zones will be able to get the same show we got. But, as cool as that was, I was the most impressed with the crazy body work the corps is doing. Is it required to take years of ballet to be in the 'coats horn line? Slow motion running...crazy cool.... I have never had a good handle on scores, so I won't go into that. Placements were as they performed, and I agree with those 100%....but I hope the COLTS overtake Madison with some crazy cleaning and a few tricks up their sleeves.... I will try to add some photos soon.
  18. The Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps and the directors of the feature length documentary “Scouts Honor: Inside A Marching Brotherhood” are pleased to announce a special screening of the film in Concord, California. On Wednesday, May 13, 2015, the movie will be shown at the Brenden Theatres located at 1985 Willow Pass Road in Concord. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the film will start at 7:00 p.m. Also appearing for a Q&A session after the screening will be director/producer Mac Smith and co-producer John “JT” Torrijos. Tickets are $10.00 and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Blue Devils “C” Corps. As a special bonus, all ticket holders will receive a FREE small popcorn and a $9.00 voucher for a future movie at Brenden Theatres! There will be a limited number of tickets available at the theater on the day of the screening, so it is suggested that you buy tickets on-line beforehand. The directors of the film, both alumni of the Madison Scouts, have long wanted to make a documentary on the marching music activity and the Madison Scouts in particular, having realized years ago what an impact such an intense activity performed at such a young age had on their lives outside of music. Their goal is to raise awareness of positive youth activities, like drum corps, which craft young people into better adults which will ultimately benefit society. One of the aspects of the documentary that the filmmakers are particularly proud of is the sound recordings of the Madison Scouts’ field performances. Co-producer John “JT” Torrijos recorded the live performances with 5.1 audio mixing in mind, wanting to allow the listening audience in the theater to experience these powerful performances as if they were on the 50 yard line of an actual show. The filmmakers are convinced that anyone who watches the documentary in a theater will get pulled into the personal stories that they follow, as well as the “wow factor” of the live performance sound recordings that will keep audience members on the edge of their seats. The Blue Devils “C” corps is made up of kids in Northern California between the ages of 8 and 14 and they perform both in parades and field shows throughout the Spring and Summer. They can be seen at both the Stanford show and the Blue Devils “Family Day” along with both the “A” and “B” corps. 21. "Scouts Honor" is a documentary film that follows the 2012 Madison Scouts on their journey from audition camp to finals night. It follows 3 members, one from the brass line, one from the drumline, and one in the colorguard, throught their personal struggles and stories about their experience within the organization. Two alumni who are professionals in the movie industry are the filmmakers. It's been doing well in the small festival circuit, but currently, distribution is limited to a theater on-demand style. I have requested a screening in DeKalb, IL, home of Northern Illinois University, 60 miles west of Chicago. If the film pre-sells at least 45 more tickets, it will take place on Thurs. February 26 at 7:30 p.m. No one is charged for the $10 ticket until the screening tips. This film is not just for Scouts fans. Anyone with an appreciation for drum corps and the marching arts will enjoy this film. I have seen a rough cut and it looks and sounds great. The screening will take place in the historic, restored Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb, home to many nice restuarants, bars, and shopping. Please consider supporting local business, independent filmmakers, and the marching arts activity by attending this screening! Often referred to as marching band on steroids, drum and bugle corps pushes young people to extreme levels, both physically and mentally -- all for one 11-minute performance. All three young men march with the Madison Scouts from Madison, Wisconsin. The strong brotherhood of this all-male organization helps them through their struggles and celebrates their triumphs.
