Rehearsal bag

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering:

A) What did you use as a rehearsal bag? Did it prove to be useful or did it just get in the way?

B) What did you keep in there? Everything, or just about nothing?

C) How many seasons did it last?

I remember my old generic backpack was bursting at the seams my rookie year because I kept so much stuff in it- most of which I didn't need anyway. By my 2nd year marching, it was virtually empty. Each year I had my fellow section members sign it so I had something to remember a great year by! Did anyone else do anything like this?

I figured this thread would prove helpful for first year marchers since most corps will be headed outside within the next two months.

Less is definitely more...usually chart book, with some extra plastic sheet sleeves, highlighters, pencils, DCT, my hat, my mouthpiece and a mouthpiece brush, and a couple shirts; if they enforced the "shirts on between 11 and 2" rule or if we had a clinic and had to wear them, or else to put on my shoulder (to protect the contra). Early in the season I would have sunscreen but I'd usually stop using it after a while. My first couple years I had a jacket for rain and bug repellent, but at some point I realized that I would end up soaked anyway, and even if it wasn't raining I'd be wet from sweat, and bugs were only a big problem a couple of times.

I used a plain tan rucksack patterned after those swiss mountain packs. I got it while I was working at LL Bean.

One HUGE main area, three smaller pockets, and storage in the top flap=epic win imho

I kept in the main compartment:

First aid kit

binder for music

binder for drill

dotboooks

run through clothes (we had to wear sweatshirts, and pants for run throughs)

fanny pack that normally held dotbooks, small sunblock thingy, dct, pencils, sharpener, chalk for drill on asphalt

waterproof rain bag

can of field paint

horn cleaning kit

Front pocket:

sunblock

DCT

deodorant

toothbrush (yes, I´m a dental health freak)

small folding knife

jewelers screw drivers

Side pocket one:

poncho

solder

Side pocket two:

extra socks (FTW)

JB weld

Carabiner clipped to side:

flip flops

water jug

Yes it was rather heavy. Yes I used it all.

Front Pocket:

Valve Oil

Chopsaver/DCT

wallet/phone

pencil

metronome

iPod

Next closest pocket to the the straps:

Sunscreen (I avoided putting other things in that one since sunscreen can explode/spray a little every once in a while.)

Next pocket:

Liquid silver polish

polishing rags (some of these already had polish on them from prior use so breathing on the horn to get it a little moist and using the rag worked quite well.)

extra gloves

Closest pocket to my back:

Drill/music notebook

Dot book

Black towel (for putting the horn on) when it wasn't hanging off the left strap which was basically on the bus or not in rehearsal for a while

Light jacket

Hat (when I wasn't wearing it)

extra pair of Socks

practice pad

Mid Pocket:

contacts case

glasses

stick tape

sun tan lotion

Little Pocket:

Burt's Bees

drum key

change

on the side I usually had a strap holding my shoes tied together, and the other strap was empty.

man......y'all are missing one of the biggest needs for tour...

B U G S P R A Y ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I never kept a bag, mainly cause I would keep my essentials in the back of my stick bag hanging from my Marimba.

Sunblock, Bugspray, disposable camera, shammy, and a watch (a cheap one from a gas station that I didn't care about)

Never brought valuables to the field. Kept them all well hidden, well, the few valuables I brought on tour.

Although in the pit, we generally shared when out on the field.
