Potential for decreasing attendance

Recommended Posts

I have no problem with the stationary finals place, but I do have a problem about Indianapolis.

Indianapolis isn't the cheapest airport to fly into. This acts as a barrier for alot of people, especially with this economy!

Changing locations gives more variety, and would help bring people into the activity who could not otherwise afford the tickets to Indy.

That's true. I'm now spending around $2000 to attend championships now coming from Arizona. Very tough and it takes budgeting the entire year to make sure we have enough $$$ for everything we want to do.

Like others I used championships to center my vacation around. Although people hate Orlando, I liked it because there is so much to do there and airfare and hotels were cheap.

As a trade off I think we'll all become acquainted to the city and know all the ins and outs. I already know places where I want to eat and see. Kind of like Madison in some ways, now if there was just a casino close by with free transportation.

Its hard to compare one night in Dayton to a week every year in Indianapolis!

I remember going to Orlando for 3 years in a row.

Stayed at Disney, because there was SO MUCH to do, but the 3rd year came and I had to find other things to do.

Was glad when the venue changed again.

I can see most everyone doing as I am and will do for the next few years - stay at home and watch the Quarters in the local movie theater, THEN head to Indy for the Friday semis competition and just do some siteseeing on Saturday before finals. Then head home early on Sunday.

I'm sure DCI got a 'deal' keeping the venue the same for a complete decade AND moving DCI headquarters there too.

Can bet it helped DCI's bottom line!

Dunno about free transportation, but Indiana Live! is 30 minutes from the airport in Shelbyville and Hoosier Park isn't much further in Anderson.

That would be me. Coming in Friday-Sunday.

Ditto that.

I'm really disappointed that they decided to do this. I'll go to DCI's...but mostly because I really want to see Regiment and would try to go to see them in finals no matter where it is (within reason).

I will never attend Finals in Indy not because it's in Indy, but because it's in a DOME. The worst listening experience I've ever had was in the old RCA Dome (see my old thread "RCA Dome spells DOOM for DCI"). And yes, Lucas Field isn't the old RCA. And yes, the Alamo Dome has a lot better acoustics than the RCA. But for me, a dome's a dome. That's another reason I won't go to San Antonio when I have 2 (now 3) great shows in Dallas and Denton.

I don't wish failure on those at DCI HQ that made this decision, but...somebody or somebodies didn't think this one through.

As far as I know, DCI attendance has always declined in consecutive years in the same venue.

Back in the mid-80s, finals were in Madison for three years running, 1985-1987, breaking with then-DCI chair Don Pesceone's policy of getting the best deals by keeping finals in a city for two years running. (Miami had been intended for a second consecutive year but was poorly attended in the first, and so it was moved to Hotlanta for 1984.) Despite the second-year fall in attendance in each venue during this era, there was discussion then, early in the Madison run, about making Madison the "permanent" championship city, but by the third year, attendance was down significantly over the first, and the idea was shelved and finals were moved to Kansas City for two years. Shortly after that, finals started moving annually.

I don't know for sure what happened in the three consecutive years in Orlando in the '90s-- and if there's a city where you can't run out of things to do on vacation, Orlando is certainly in the running-- but I think it declined then as well.

A steady dropoff seems likely to me.

Good point. It can be the same in drum corps. How many of those complaining about finals every year in Indy are the same that love returning to Madison year after year?

I love Madison like once every 3/4 years

Well technically, Lucas is not a dome. It's got a retractable roof. I don't know to what extent that makes a difference in the acoustics. I also thought that I had read that DCI/BOA had some input into the construction of the stadium for acoustics but I can't reference that.

Was BOA held there last fall? If anyone on the forum was there, could you comment on the acoustics?
