Ray Priester
John Girardi, a member of the NY Skyliners and Skyliners Alumni Corps, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer early this morning. He was 51. John, along with his good friend George "Sidemouth" Richardson, could be found playing many solos with the corps in the 80s and 90s and later with the alumni. A talented soprano, he was also a fine instructor with both corps during his career. John and Sidemouth will once again be sharing solos for Hy, Lefty, Winky and Pepe. He leaves his wife, Connie, and a daughter, Theresa and his sister, Diana who is also an alumna of the corps. The wake will be held on Sunday and Monday, October 18 and 19, from 2-5 and 7-9PM on both days at the R.P. Drago Funeral Home, 43-10 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. The funeral will be on Wednesday, October 20 from St Joseph's RC Church, 43-19 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103. May he rest in peace. FPonzo
This is indeed some of the sadest news ever. John was such a great guy, and an incredibly talented horn player. I remember coming thru the ranks with the Sunrisers in the 80's and listening to him and Sidemouth play some of the most amazing duets in DCA history. (They were just an incredible pair, and no two people have come close to playing duets like them since!). You could feel his heart...and soul...in every note he played. Thanks John....for being the gifted horn player you were, and sharing this gift with thousands of people. (including me) You WILL be missed!!!! RIP John!
