The history of the Westshoremen

Recommended Posts

This one's for Chum... Ben....

Ran into Paul G at the show and turned out he was playing pit right next to Fran. Well.. not RIGHT next to as we know Fran needs swinging room. Talked to Paul before the show and his best line was something like "Yep, gotta unload the truck. Some things never change."

They brought the pit stuff down the sloped aisle just as Kris and I got seated. Fran is in front of a huge bass drum on wheels and as he goes by he sez to us: "Yeah Jim, lotta momentum here". On the way back Paul is carying the cymbal (simple) rank and acts like he's going to drop it on us. Nice to be noticed.

Almost forgot.... got a nice shoulder rub and pat on the back from the former VP of DCA. Was talking to Bill Light and someone else and next thing... "Hello Larry" (remember that POS TV show?) First chance I had to talk with him for more than a few seconds in years.

Wow...Paul G was in the house! Did you tell him about our little internet porn....I mean internet chat group here?

No time, he had to get to the truck before Bennys spirit kicked his butt...

I did remind him "TYMPS GO IN FIRST!" and asked if he had to sit on a metal trunk for a seat (Man if the cops or my mom only knew  ).

Funny as Hades seeing both of you together Fran. Anytime I talk about riding in the drum truck from 74-79 with Benny Behrens the quartermaster, Paul was the third member of our group. Actually I saw Fran outside walking up and as I was waiting the guy next to him yelled "Hey Jim" and I recognized Pauls voice. He had a big ol' golfing cap on and I couldn't see his face that clearly.

Tymps go in first....God..it's been YEARS since I heard that! I remember after a practice in 79 when I couldn't get the leg off of my 29" tymp, and I went up tot he truck and Benny said some thing to the effect of "JEEZIZ K-RIST, GO GET ME A WRENCH OR SOMETHING THAT'S THE FIRST #### ONE IN!"

Yeah, Paul was great..I haven't seen him in at least 20 years...when I worked at a bank, I was in charge of fleet vehicles, and whenever one got dinged, I used to take it to him (he was a claims adjuster) I remember the first time I walked in it was like old times...his co workers were like HUH?!?!?!

They weren't Bush, but that book was sooooo musical.

You're right... good point. That year, I was kinda mentally comparing their execution level to that of the great lines from that 1970s-early 80s period, and that was an unfair/impossible comparision.

At least you weren't a snare trying to get your drum in first. New guy did that one time and Benny about ripped him a new one. "NO, tymps in first THEN snares. Just put it in the case. NO! put it off to the side so no one trips over it <bleep, bleep>."

And HEAVENS forbid if a horn player tried to put his horn in the cargo bays researved for the drums. The horn case would be on the ground. LOL, my favorite was anyone saying "But I'm on that bus". Response from Paul, Benny or me would be "What, ya gonne freakin' get the horn out and practice on the trip? All buses are going to the same place."

Hmm, maybe that's where I picked up my sarcastic streak...

Fran, the drum truck was a converted refridgerated truck that was a LOT smaller on the inside than it appeared due to the thick insulated walls. An old bread trck would have worked better.

Very funny thread. I hope you all had a good time and a great show.

We all love Drum Corps and know that some are better than others, why else would there be scoring? You have a great history.

I hope you had fun and got a dip from the $9,000 Jack barrel.

Kevin

He had some colorful language for things...that's all I remember.... I also remember whenever we'd stop because the bus drivers needed a pee break and some coffee, he was always first out, and grabbing a bite to eat while they took a break! Dude was skinny as hell, but he could eat with the best of them!

Yeah, that stupid refrigerator truck...When I marched Chocolatiers, they had an old bread truck with shelves on it and it held TWICE as much as the old Westshore truck! In fact, they also carted four contra's in HARD CASES and STILL had room leftover!
