Infamous Drum Corps Members

Recommended Posts

My favorite was the tymp player who drove a new Corvette Stringray to practice. Someone asked the drum instructor what he did for a leaving and found out he was a manager of a Handy Market (old Northeast version of 7-11). Far as I know he was never indicted for fraud when Handy Markets went under a few years later....

We once had a bass drummer who could suck peas through his nose (they had to be cooked though). Does that count?

That would get a 10 in GE.

OK, this is fun! I guess when I think of "black sheep," I think of people who did something to get them kicked out of a corps . . . or close to it. That's why I thought the thread could be headed for trouble. Mea culpa!

There was a guy that would climb everything... lamp posts, road signs, gym rafters.

We pulled into a McDonalds with a state trooper car parked outside. When he drove away he had no license plates.

Another guy was famous for finding a hair 3/4 of the way through every Big Mac he ever bought and always got free one.

There I was, in Whitewater WI for the second of three times during the summer of 1985. Or was it the first?

Anyway.

It was the the middle of the afternoon and we were being herded off to nap for a couple hours. In drum corps. A nap. Srsly. That was not what I signed up for, but then again, I didn't ever picture myself singing freakin Mickey Mouse in a pink uniform in my drum corps dreams, but there I was, also not there to march in a top twelve corps. Oh no, it was suggested to me during a Very Inspirational Speech at the first open house that if I wanted to march in a top twelve corps I should go to the Phantom Regiment or the Cavaliers or the Madison Scouts, so being broke and female, there I was, marching for some sort of moral victory for corporate american or some VIS like that. And to add insult to injury, now being told to take a nap.

Well, I was having none of that, so I graciously offered to pick up some supplies for people when I went for a ciggie run and to find the local Taco Bell. Ah, yes, it was the first time or I would have already known that location. Burrito Surpreme, hold the onion and an order of nachos....

Where was I? Oh yeah, skipping out on the nap. After picking up a pack of smokes and surveying the terrain, I headed back to the facility we were housed in. As I headed off to the girls sleeping area I was approached by none other than Moe Latour who promptly informed me, as any fabulous tour manager would do, that I was suppose to be taking a nap with the rest of the corps. To which I replied

Moe, I'm a #### up. Deal with it.

He was speechless.

And I went off to the gym, distributed my goods, we were all shushed by none other than kstein and I went through the motions of "nap time".

I don't think they tried that again for the rest of the summer.

I got more....To be continued...

Things were a bit tamer in England in the eighties. I do remember staying in a school hall on the Isle of Wight and witnessing on member of our corps skate boarding naked across the hall with a flashing light taped to his head! I'd never seen a 'flasher' prior to this. :grouphug:

Ah yes..... 70s Westshore had nothing on the later members....

Friday night the buses are heading to a show and they stop at the McDonalds in Phillipsburg, NJ so Hershman can tell the manager we'll be stopping on the way back. Most of us never knew it as is was the middle of the night, but the next morning at practice two guys have a McDonalds flag on an extra flag pole. Hershman comes out and sez: "I don't know who did it. I don't want to know who did it. But we're STOPPING there tonight so maybe some people won't want ot come out of the bus in case you were seen". That night we were checking if an accomplice was getting some meals to go for the guys hiding on the bus. Bus driver Howies version: "Saw the flag go down and realize it didn't come back up. All I could think of was ####### Westshore". :grouphug:

One of the guys used to post here and also led the infamous "Underwear Walks" in the early 80s.

Edit: Hairbear, need the details on the cooler diving, don't want to mess that up with the little I heard. Think McShane was also the one who walked up to the lifeguard with a pair of swim trunks in his hand saying "Someone lost these in the pool... oh wait they're mine". :mat: Might have been the hotel that the corps got a police escort out of town.

Only to be topped by the legend that the Rhode Island Matadors got a police escort out of CANADA around 1974.
