MAV
When I think of ballads, I think of love songs. In the 'old' days, many of the ballads were part of the closer which then lead into either a reprise of the opener or just continued into a huge impact, company front, babies flying, standing-o, etc. Here are just a few I compiled one year for Valentine's Day. The ones in bold are my Top 10 pick in no particular order. To me, Blue Devils and Madison stand alone for the best ballads - goosebumps on goosebumps. 2007 As If We Never Said Goodbye.....Colts 2006 My Heart and I...........................Bluecoats 2005 Til There Was You......................Colts 2005 Some Enchanted Evening............Blue Knights 2005 Angel........................................Carolina Crown 2003 The Prayer................................Boston Crusaders 2002 One Day I'll Fly Away.................Carolina Crown 2000 Come to Me, Bend to Me.............Pioneer 1995 Joy of Man's Desiring..................Glassmen 1994 As Time Goes By.......................Colts 1993 Encore......................................Madison 1992 When A Man Loves A Woman......Blue Devils 1989 If We Were In Love....................Blue Devils 1988 Wishing You Were Hear Again.....SCV 1988 Since I Fell For You....................Blue Devils 1987 Autumn Leaves.........................Bluecoats 1984 With You I'm Born Again............Garfield Cadets 1984 Like A Lover.............................Blue Devils 1984 Let Me Try Again.......................Crossmen 1984 I Have A Love...........................Garfield Cadets 1983 We Are the Reason...................Spirit of Atlanta 1983 Even Now.................................Freelancers 1983 Breaking Up is Hard to Do..........Freelancers 1982 People Alone.............................Blue Devils 1981 The Greatest Love.....................27th Lancers 1980 Softly As I Leave You................Cavaliers 1980 Ice Castles...............................Madison Scouts 1980 Let It Be Me..............................Spirit of Atlanta 1979 Pieces of Dreams......................Madison Scouts 1979 My Heart Belongs to Me.............Blue Devils 1978 Come in From the Rain..............Blue Stars 1976 What I Did for Love...................Bridgemen 1974 Once Upon A Time....................Cavaliers 1974 A Time for Us...........................Phantom Regiment 1973 Summer of 42..........................Bridgemen
JamMan
I love a ballad that doesn't get stale and boring halfway through (obvious, huh?), but I've seen a lot of real snoozers in these pages. 1. Phantom '93 2. Cadets '05 3. BD '04 4. Cadets '00 5. SCV '04 6. Star '91 7. Phantom '94 8. SCV '00 9. BD '00 10. Cadets '03 Honorable Mention: Star '93 (Just because it's hard to define.) Bruckner8
1988 SCV: "Music of the Night" (Yeah, I know it was the closer with a loud ### ending...I was ON THE FIELD...still, a kick ### ballad nonetheless!!) I completely agree! Dude, I was there, in the stands that night. I was so proud as an SCV Contra alum. The build into and arrival on that climax (on the subdominant) was incredible; I can still hear it in my head like it was yesterday. All made possible by that contra section. 1987 was another one. Hell, the entire 80s of SCV Low Brass should've had a Caption award all their own. ...and that's early! Since "link was removed by admin," search some favorite sites for "SCV 1988 Early Season Runthrough Pt 2" Edited January 11, 2010 by Bruckner8 Link removed
general_tsos_chicken2
Since all my other favorite ballads have been listed already, I'm just going to say the one that hasn't CROSSMEN 2004 - both sides now ... sooo good! pretty surprised nobody has mentioned it actually. tommytimp
In no particular order: 1. Dindi, BD 1980. Mmmmph. 2. Goin' Home, Phantom 1989. 3. A Simple Song, Garfield 1983 There's your contractually mandated Obligatory Barbara Moroney Reference. 4. Could We Start Again Please, Knights 1985. My favorite ballad I ever played, and the emotional high point of the best show I ever did. 5. The Fire of Eternal Glory, Phantom 1993. 6. Grover's Corners, SCV 1985. Pit solo with horn accompaniment. Oh yeah. 7. Edie's theme, Garfield 1986. 8. Ice Castles, Madison 1981. The best corps of the three, so they get the nod. 9. 18th Variation, Phantom 1995. 10. In the Wee Small Hours, Dutch Boy 1987. A great signpost to where they were headed.
