Percussion Scores shakeup in NJ

Recommended Posts

Well, we all knew it would happen at some point. PR is no longer undefeated in Percussion! This proves again that the first week of tour didn't prove anything as far as scores go. Should be an interesting rest of the summer...

Couldn't you say that is just different judges opinions?

I was at the show (and I've been involved in drum corps percussion for 35 years)......the call was accurate........Crown did not have a stellar run.........Phantom and Bluecoats were tighter in percussion.....I had it Phantom, Bluecoats, Crown..........the judge had it close but flipped........I think all 3 have excellent books, but I believe Phantom has the toughest overall of the 3......I could see any of those llines beating each other depending on how they perform on any given night, which is the way that it should be............I thought the overall judging was fairly accurate as well. I do believe Phantom has the most substance (and thus potential) in their show of the competitors here, but they are struggling with performance levels at times, especially visually. If they can iron that out, look out.

my guess would be that the judges are falling more into the "body movement" phase and are awarding points for it. and since phantom doesnt have much body movement at all, they dont score as high. but i do agree, phantom does have the most substance. paul's way of playing the quads against the snare writing is just great. and the bassline is so smooth over both parts! sandi has great FE writing and gives a warm feel. bluecoats i feel havent had a great book since 08. the writing seems really stale and predictable at times, but having said that, they are pulling it off (will a million and one visuals) and are being rewarded for it.

coats may have won the battle, but who will win the war? we shall see...

I guess it's a matter of individual tastes and preferences because I think the writing last year and especially this year is anything but stale and predictable.

The judges seem to like it too...for what that's worth.

If you put all of the DCI Percussion Judges out on the field at the same time to judge the same sub caption at Prelims; would they all come back with same scores and same placements? No; so therefore it is just subjective opinion by educated judges using a common judging criteria sheet.

So, is this something to cheer about? Phantom will be fine.
