What the fans want...2011

Recommended Posts

You really think they sat down and counted up the comments and than calculated a percentage? OK.

Music judges have the ability to see and understand the movement demands placed on the players performance of the chart. I doubt most visual judges can say the same about the details of percussion performance (to use your example).

I cringe when some of the USSBA 'Overall Effect' judges who are primarily visual folks make the occasional and obligatory music comments, in lots of cases totally lame or even factually incorrect. A lot of them just don't have the music background to the level needed for such comments to be remotely helpful.

But your comment from the music judge makes my point exactly...the visual demands are being used as they relate to the music, which IMO is not only fine...it should happen consistently.

well Mike...yes, they did just that. They did sit down and count. We've even had one DCI staffer I know well come right out and say it on here this past summer while on tour. Sadly, it trickles down to all levels of the activity. While I agree music judges do know what's going on musically, enough of these visual judges have been around and should have some basic understanding. hell one prominent GE visual judge in DCI is a college band director. There are others that also have music in their backgrounds.

However while you mention "effect" judges ( and you give a great reason why overall effect is a disaster waiting to happen if DCI adopts it), in more performance oriented captions, there should be reward both ways...and there isn't.

<but on a visual tape do you hear "oh snares, you missed that form locking, but I realize you're trying to lock a fast roll there">

Sorry...I just had to re-post this quote because, despite the arguing about it from people that purport to know...it seems totally true to me. The idea of a visual judge saying anything like that is laughable.

I would think our activity would only improve if ALL judges were more aware of the simultaneous demands so well illustrated by other posters.

do you not find it imbalanced that music judges get crucified for not taking visual issues into consideration, but visual judges do not?

The above code generated after I edited my post. The photo is reposted below using IMG link. The site is nice. No worries. I know it takes time to get the kinks out. Good job DCP staff!

Probably should have renamed the thread title "What the fans of this millenium want....2011"

Or "Btichy Responders... HERE'S YOUR CHANCE!!!"
