INSIDETHEFORTY
I am currently studying the 2011 DCI tour schedule, wondering how the 2011 schedule addresses the problem of increasing operating costs. Call me crazy, but it looks to me that there are a number of segments of the tour that will cause the corps to spend more money, rather than less! Take the first week of the tour, for example. The G-8 travels even more miles in 2011 than ever before! Note: A week for the G-8 is 8 days! This is the Blue Devils opening week after traveling from California to Texas: June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Rio Rancho, NM Drums Along the Sandias June 22 - Mesa, AZ Southwest Corps Connection June 24 - Clovis, CA Mid Cal Tour of Champions June 25 - Stanford, CA DCI West Why travel from California to Texas and back for only 4 shows? Is it a sound strategy, financially? The Cavaliers travel from Illinois and open with 5 shows in the first week. June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Martin, TN June 24 - Muncie, IN DCI Central Indiana June 25 - Grand Rapids, MI DCI Central Michigan That's a lot of miles in one week! I hope they get some rest. The Bluecoats have a very busy opening week after leaving Ohio. June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Martin, TN June 22 - Fairfield, OH Summer Music Games in Cincinnati June 23 - Pittsburgh, PA Three Rivers SUMMER MUSIC GAMES June 25 - Grand Rapids, MI Can you spell BURNOUT? Starting in South Carolina, Carolina Crown's opening week looks like this. June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 24 - Muncie, IN DCI Central Indiana June 25 - Grand Rapids, MI Some much needed rest for the corps after the 2 Texas shows, but still a lot of miles in one week! The Cadets travel from Pennsylvania to Texas to California during the first week of the season!! June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Rio Rancho, NM Drums Along the Sandias June 22 - Mesa, AZ Southwest Corps Connection June 24 - Clovis, CA Mid Cal Tour of Champions June 25 - Stanford, CA DCI West Is this a "My corps can endure more miles than your corps!", competition between Gibbs and Hoppy? Phantom Regiment is doing 6 shows in 8 days! June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Rio Rancho, NM Drums Along the Sandias June 22 - Mesa, AZ Southwest Corps Connection June 24 - Clovis, CA Mid Cal Tour of Champions June 25 - Stanford, CA DCI West With 4 of the G-8 going to California, I just might travel to California for the series of shows there! Santa Clara Vanguard's tour starts in Northern California and mirrors the Blue Devils. June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Rio Rancho, NM Drums Along the Sandias June 22 - Mesa, AZ Southwest Corps Connection June 24 - Clovis, CA Mid Cal Tour of Champions June 25 - Stanford, CA DCI West If I make the trip, I may put more miles on my Greyhound than the corps put on their busses during the first week! The Blue Stars have an ambitious opening week ahead of them also! June 18 - Saginaw, TX DCI Ft. Worth, a Tour of Champions Series event June 19 - Round Rock, TX DCI Austin, a Tour of Champions Series event June 21 - Martin, TN June 22 - Fairfield, OH Summer Music Games in Cincinnati June 24 - Muncie, IN DCI Central Indiana June 25 - Grand Rapids, MI DCI Central Michigan I would hate to have to be responisible for paying their fuel bill, even for 1 week! What are your plans for the opening weeks of the 2011 season? Edited December 3, 2010 by INSIDETHEFORTY
TerriTroop
I won't be going to those early TOC shows in Texas, even with one right in my back yard. I'll save my money and go to the later Texas shows that have a wider representation of drum corps (along with guaranteed complete shows from everyone). However, if those were the only drum corps shows that were going to be in my state, I'd probably go. I'm just lucky to have a better option in July. Edited to add: As for my travel plans, I'll try to go to either Minneapolis or Indy along with 2 of the July shows in Texas, probably. INSIDETHEFORTY
well, they think big travel is the way to go. we'll see who begs for gas money first and loudest You see my point! I save money on drum corps travel by using a Greyhound Discovery Pass. A 60-day pass is only $539.00 per person! Check it out! lindap
'What are your plans for the opening weeks of the 2011 season?' Someplace close with at least 5 corps. I travel light and so should they. If I plan this right, we'll see friends along the way :-)
CrownStarr
You see my point! I have no idea what the diesel bill for each of the G-8 corps will be, but I suspect it will be in excess of $250,000!It's a shame that the corps can't utilize money-saving options such as the Greyhound Discovery Pass! With it, I can travel nearly anywhere in the continental United States for up to 60 days!!! Instead of my drum corps summer costing me over $15,000.00 in gas, , hotel rooms, food, tickets and such, I can do my entire DCI summer tour for much less! If each corps member could utilize a Pass (or an incredibly great deal from Greyhound), the G-8 corps could each travel from June 12th until August 11th for less than $100,000 each, since a 60-day pass is only $539.00per person! Check it out! GREYHOUND DISCOVERY PASS Greyhound? Good god, maybe if we want to get to all our shows at least five hours late.

I may travel from Syracuse, NY to Texas for the 1st two shows, then continue west, shadowing the Santa Clara Vanguard all the way to Stockton CA. From there, I will probably head East, stopping over in Mankato, MN, Whitewater, WI, and Michigan City, IN before going home for my family's annual July 4th picnic. End of tour 1 What are your plans for the opening weeks of the 2011 season? But all that bus time will give them an opportunity to learn the saxaphone parts.
