Bruckner8
And now we have corps like Bluecoats, who still play pop, soundtracks, jazz, and modern but have a classical approach to writing and sound. In fact, everyone except Blue Devils sound more classical than ever, regardless of repertoire. And BD has won more horn titles than anyone. (In the last few years, BD is slightly darker with the all-Euph line, and I enjoyed their rendition of Band of Brothers at Standford in 2009. So even they have come to the dark[er] side.) What again, is the point of this thread? I guess it's "We want 1980's sound to come back." Umm, no.

I think you are bit confused about the Bluecoats. 160bpm is not a symphonic/classical piece. It's a film score piece written by Hanz Zimmer for the movie Angels and Demons. Lance
even arrangements of other genres are so far removed from the original source music lately that I'd classify a lot more as "original" than the percentage indicated. visual dominate all now, so altering music to fit the visual is pretty much the norm...it's just hard to find truly original pieces that are any good, so instead arrangers take the tastiest motifs and melodies from good music, and do variations/chop up the originals. corps back in the day watered down a lot of source music making it oftentimes barely resemble the original. nowadays corps are so good, they could really make faithful arrangments soar...but it's rare when that happens, unfortunately. I get the idea that "some" arrangements are chopped up. But I don't really agree that they alter the music to fit the visual... maybe for corrections during the season, but as far as planning the music, its done way in advanced of any drill writing. So I don't see the connection.

So I don't see the connection. I do get what you're saying. I'm speaking in generalities which is dangerous. BD was very faithful to the original music last year, for example. So was SCV. But it's pretty rare that I see that being the case intentionallly from most arrangers. It depends on the year and the goals for the show, I guess. And I think back to the 80s and 90s when arrangers were (IMO) trying harder to stay faithful to the music, but had to water down and give keys complex passages, making it barely sound like the original. In short, I just wish more corps would follow the example set forth by SCV in 09/10.
Blackstar
I think the greatest difference between 1980 and 2010 is the varied musical selections in each show. Look at Bridgemen, orginally written in 1910 classical opener, into Funk Jazz Fusion drum solo, (please check out the orginal by Weather Report) Then an Earth Wind and Fire song followed by band band music and finally a civil war medly. The only them there is have fun and listen to some good music. Bluecoats, Theme Metropolis The future is now - 160bpm from Angels and Demons, AHA! by Imogen Heap, Metropolis by doug Thrower and finally Asphalt Cocktail I understand that musical taste change but I found many of my favorite pieces of music listening to drum corps. Theres been very few over the past decade that has fallen into that catagory with Asphalt Cocktail being one of them. I think theres to much reach to fit a theme then entertain an audience.
