DCI DVD sales survey

Recommended Posts

So who else got this survey, and what does it say when DCI feels the need to gather info on why we did not buy DVDs this year as opposed to 2011?

I got it but not sure why. I bought Blu-Rays in 2011 and 2012 with my Fan Network memberships. I was interested in the questions about a pay per view of finals though.

It says they have a marketing department. This is an extremely common practice when dealing with goods that are renewed from year to year. Nothing out of the ordinary.

It tells me that DCI wants to find out why DVD sales ( as opposed to blu ray disc sales perhaps ? ) were not as strong in 2012 as they were in 2011 ( if it fact what you are saying here is accurate regarding DVD's sales year over end ).

What does it " say " to you when they ask you this question ?

I got it. They seem to not know who is getting BD instead of DVDs...

My hunch is that they are considering eliminating DVD sales and moving entirely to stream feeds.

That, and perhaps the fact that blu ray disc might be replacing the old DVD formats sometime in the near future.

The Essentials DCI blu ray compilation of some Finals shows from 70's to 2007 was introduced in 2012 and this probably cut into 2012 DVD sales too.... who knows. I see nothing at all unusual here with companies asking questions about products and product format preferences. This is standard stuff here. So I'm not sure what the OP is driving at here.

actucker, you are correct. After 12 years attending the Indy 500 with the same seats, I decided not to renew. I got the same kind of inquiry from IMS. My reasoning is simple. It's the economy. I realize many of you live in other regions of the country, so I can only offer the perspective of an eastern Pennsylvanian, but, it's time to prioritize spending. Signs of inflation are rampant here. Just about every bill I pay monthly has increased 8-10%. Increases in food prices are off the chart, etc. It's not so much if I can still afford the usual items, I most definitely can. It's a matter of what makes most economic sense in effort to maintain current abilities, despite the national economy.

The way I typically did the race, I'd spend $2000 over 4 days. Granted, those are an enjoyable 4 days, but what makes more sense? Four days of bliss, or payment for 365 days of the following . . . local newspaper, cell phone, ESPN Gameplan, vehicle registrations, DirecTV upgrades, etc?

I believe this is a challenge both DCI and DCA will face again through the coming year. I am a firm believer BOTH organizations need to squeeze as much income from pay-per-view as possible right now. There are many interested fans out here, but I'm afraid many will begin to cut back spending on usual pleasures. I will not be surprised if purchases of DVDs, and such, decline for now.

Well - here's the body of the email minus the link to the survey and the ending pleasantries....

Dear Drum Corps International Fan:

First, thank you for your support.

Second, we've selected you to receive this invitation because according to our records, you purchased/acquired a DVD product of the 2011 season, but did not acquire any 2012 DVD products. If that's not true, please click through to the survey and indicate that we are mistaken.

We'd like to get some insight as to why you purchased/acquired 2011 performance DVDs but not 2012 performance DVDs. If can click the following link, you will be taken to a very short (less than 2 minutes)survey. We're working on a very tight timeline and are trying to get a critical mass of responses by this weekend - 27-Jan-2013.

Here's the link to the survey:

------------------

Like you, I think sales are down and they want to know why. So - why?

The survey is just to learn what you think to help them better serve you in the future. But it's also a way to keep contact info up to date, just in case you're no longer walking the earth. Different surveys are organized in different years to get a pulse on buying trends and to help plan future products.

Over my years with DCI, I've seen the LPs discontinued, as well as the audio tapes. I'm hoping DVDs stick around, but with the incredibly cheap price of Blu-Ray players, who knows?

The survey is the flip side of people who have stated in the past that DCI doesn't care about them. I think this is preferable.
