No Florida?

Recommended Posts

Just realized that there are zero Florida shows this year. Kinda sad and strange. Isn't DCI missing a huge opportunity to reach out to a ton of marching musicians in Florida?

I had noticed that as well. You would think there would be several in Florida considering how many corps draw members from there. Not to mention that it is the 4th largest state.

Yes, isn't it strange that Florida gives so many young people to corps from MA, WI, IL, PA, etc and yet there is no show in Florida! Although DCA is thriving in FL with two corps.

From past experience of doing tour administration I know first hand that housing situations for the corps in Florida is quite difficult, the long travel drives between shows before and after, and the stormy, hot, and humid Florida summer weather, particularly with the daily rain shower and frequent lightening makes show cancellations and postponements inevitable. Cost outlay does not come back to the corps.

I know this has probably has nothing to do with it, but Florida weather can be pretty tricky during the summer.

Yes, it rain showers a bit almost every day come late July, August in Florida. Lightening in a big issue as well. ( more people are killed every year in Florida by lightening, than sharks,' gators, & snakes combined ) Also, Florida used to have a few Corps domiciled in the state of Florida, ie Magic, Suncoast Sound, Teal Sound, etc, that ran shows but they are unfortunately, no more.

New York is a large state, and it used to have dozens of shows every summer. But thats all changed now too. Texas, that used to have no Drum Corps shows, is now chock full of shows, and quality local shows and at great pricing too compared to local shows on the East Coast.

Might be due to the fact that Florida doesn't have a junior corps. Granted, there are many states that host shows without having a junior corps, but those states/stadiums aren't as far from show sites, as it is to get down to parts of Florida.

My thought is probably not "the reason" but could be a reason.

It is a missed opportunity, but so is not having shows in Canada and many other states where corps draw from and have big alumni bases.

Just throwing the thought out there.

The costs between TX and the East Coast don't appear to be all that different.

Denton and Houston tickets are 25-45. the YEA! shows range from 15/18 and up...the top VIP are high (40/50/65), but they include more than just a ticket. The CYO show is 20-35, Lynn is 25-50 and laqwrence is 20-40, while New Haven is 15-25. (Prices from the show event info online).

BTW...there are three shows showing in TX, plus Broken Arrow's in OK. Did I miss some? There are seven in the mid-Atlantic area, between PA, NJ, CT and MA.

Yes, DCI Drum Corps used to have quite a few shows each year in Canada... including their DCI Championships in city of Montreal which still holds the record for the largest DCI Finals announced crowd ever. DCI used to have many Corps from Canada, but now has no representation in its World Class Division at all from this large North American country. I wish it wasn't so.
