Boston's Up!

Recommended Posts

I bought the APDs of about 7 shows from 2013, I find myself going back to this one more and more. I think I'm in the minority here, but I see huge potential here. I think we've become accustomed to Boston coming out of the gate with a pretty easy to get and well displayed show early season since I would say 2008. I see absolutely HUGE potential here. The music is fantastic and they have the bones of a great visual program. Nothing really stands out as being poorly written to me. I just think they have tons to add to get this show across to us. Right now I am not really getting the theme, but I can see spots that they can (and I'm sure will) add tons of things. Something tells me from what they said on the webcast to some posts on here as well as a spot in the show, that something changes with the uniform in the second half of the show that is going to be absolutely glorious. I'm not a fan of the grey for the whole show. I think it sets the tone early on for gloom and doom very well. But I think they have something up their sleeves that will blow our socks off.

Like I said, I think I'm used to Boston coming out swinging with a fun and accessible show right off the bat. Pines of Rome, 1812 Overture, Les Mis, Bachanale, ect. are all famous and fun pieces. These musical selections have a little more depth and meaning to them, and are a bit darker . This is a much more complex program and show than I'm used to for them. I think it's one that they're going to take time to develop into something absolutely spectacular. I wouldn't count Boston out in a heartbeat, I think they're going to surge as their show develops over the season. But what do I know? I'm a 19 year old college kid who hasn't even gone to their first drum corps audition. We shall see. Just my thoughts on a show I can't wait to see evolve.

Good points, all around.

I saw BAC from the Akron show in the movie theater earlier this week... their first show of the season... and had similar thoughts.

The show didn't quite grab me the way other Boston shows have in recent years. But it sure seems they have the pieces in place to develop this program into a top-notch product by season's end.

Maybe they do... then again, maybe they don't.

Time will tell.

I'm not pushing any panic buttons yet. If you are concerned that they have recently been outscored by Cavies and Madison, all I can offer is to point you to the last several seasons. Cavies were ahead of them at this time last year, and Madison has been consistently 2-4 points ahead at this point each year since 2009. As for Spirit of Atlanta, good for them! I think it is a healthy thing to have new blood in the upper eschelons....Come on in, Spirit! The water is fine!

I remain supremely confident in the corps, it's leadership, and particularly it's membership. The show continues to evolve per plans made last winter, and the kids seem to be crazy about this show. It isn't even July yet! For the record, in 2000 BAC's FIRST show was on July 4th, and the corps was still struggling. (They finished 5th.)

Over the past five years, here is how Boston's scores improved from their first competition through Quarterfinals / Prelims:

2008 --- 67.100 (6/21) >>> 87.925 (8/07) --- +20.825 over 47 days --- avg. +0.443 / day

2009 --- 68.900 (6/19) >>> 90.350 (8/06) --- +21.450 over 48 days --- avg. +0.447 / day

2010 --- 75.000 (6/26) >>> 89.750 (8/12) --- +14.750 over 47 days --- avg. +0.314 / day

2011 --- 67.100 (6/23) >>> 90.200 (8/11) --- +23.100 over 49 days --- avg. +0.471 / day

2012 --- 69.050 (6/22) >>> 89.000 (8/09) --- +19.950 over 48 days --- avg. +0.416 / day

This year, Boston's first show was 6/22, with 47 days until Prelims on 8/08. Their first score was 64.300.

Therefore, their recent history suggests their score on that date will land between 79.058 and 86.437.

On the other hand, five days after Boston's 2013 debut, their latest score is 68.800, an average increase of 0.900 per day. If they were able to keep up that rate, they'd get a Prelims score of 102.100!

On the other other hand, they actually had a stronger first five days in 2011, when their average daily increase was 1.120. Had they kept up that pace, they would have earned 121.980 in Prelims.

With a completely different program coordinator, cg caption head, and drill writer this year...I find it hard if not impossible to even try to compare the previous years...the jury is still out on this one...
