Spandy
Do we think there will be drum heads and tarps that are anything but white? Or is this it...surely the creatives behind CC don't think these are OK... Maybe it's just me, but I don't really get the fascination lately with custom printed drum heads. Every once in a while I see some I really like (BAC's aged wood look is great this year, subtle and appropriate), but most of the time it just looks tacky (IMO, of course). As for the tarps though, I agree. If you're gonna use them, make them look like something. Edited August 1, 2014 by Spandy

They're supposed to be white dwarf stars. :-P
crfrey71
Now that you have made that clear, it looks like DCI will have to refine the brass sheet based on your personal preference. Based on personal preference? The hornline as a whole is judged on the overall sound and balance between the hi voices and low voices. That is not a personal preference, but a requirement. If this was just about the soprano voices, I would agree with BD ahead of Crown. But as a whole sound, I do not hear the low voices in BD's line like I do in Crown's. The synth is BD's low brass sound that I hear and I wish they would not have the synth playing almost note for note, what the tubas are playing. crfrey71
jmc5682 . . . be careful of saying that "the Gold medal is what is most important" on DCP and Crown forums. I think with the talent Crown has brought in for the last several years, they should have been in a place to win the Gold, but design staff and percussion techs has been an achilles heel for them. This corps now brings in tremendous talent year after year and has rarely been given a show that can compete for 1st beyond brass. Most of the musical selection was blah in 2010 and I have never been able to figure out what the show was about. The 2011 show was fun, but never had a chance. What a show, though, for a percussion line, writers, and techs to really perform. Nope! Percussion was terrible. Last year, they were beat in finals by the Madison Scouts. And, in some ways, the percussion was a good reason why Crown did not get a medal in 2012. In 2012, they ended up with an 18.8. Something in design and percussion needs to change if Crown is ever to be a consistent contender for the Gold. But, right now, Crown seems to have set its priorities on winning the Ott for the most part. But brass alone will not contend for titles. Right now, Crown's staff seems to have the mind set that a title every now and then is nice, but consistency is far from the their minds (except for Mr. Harloff). The reason I suggest caution is because corps aren't really supposed to care about placements and scores, although DCI is a competitive activity. The 2014 Crown could have contended if not for this disaster design the staff put on the field. Cappybara just LOLed me, but Crown is now looking at 6th place rather than the top 5 based on scores from last night. The Cavies get cleaner and cleaner while the Crown staff does more changing of its show than cleaning it. I am thrilled to death, though, that Mr. Kevin Smith is being inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame. This is an area of judging I am tired of. Where the design is 70/100 points and what the corps achieves on the field is only worth 30 points.

crfrey71
I thought they were grapefruit? While they were out in California, I saw them under the lights, so they look more like pizzas. But maybe in daylight, more like grapefruit. It's all about the lighting.

Regular daylight definitely gives the grapefruit vibe. The real question is "what the hell do grapefruit and pizza have to do with gypsies?" Actually, now that I look at them again, I'm reminded of some good deep dish pizza... and now I'm hungry Edited August 2, 2014 by THEdevilYOUknow
