Proper attire required to rehearse?

Recommended Posts

Very little tends to offend me. However, I was offended when a staff member from a corps that was staying at my school walked around shirtless. He wore large nipple rings. Summer school was going on at this time. I didn't think this was a good example of promoting drum corps.

Sounds like time for a paintball version of Quidditch!

Well, blame the school districts, not the corps or DCI. Stupid rules are still rules.

Exactly. Community calls and complains to the school, principal has a talk with the band director or whomever the contact point is, etc. Ours is an activity that relies on so many different people and organizations for support, you have to keep 'em happy

In Texas, the backbone of the morality that sustains our economy and society and is the light of freedom that illuminates the world and the heavens, drum corps may well be evidence of our decline.

Today I re-read the Documents of our Founding Fathers, including the Constitution and Federalist Papers, and I saw nothing about the right to march nude on football fields while playing Gabriel's Trumpet.

I say - arrest those nude libs before they corrupt the Republic of Texas!

Or the Texans could just avert their eyes and await the Apocalypse. DCI people are too freaky evil to be Raptured anyway, so let them rehearse in hell. All the Raptured should get a great and free view of their shows from the Press Box in the Clouds.

And along with dress codes.... no smoking or drinking fire water on school grounds either..... and pick up that #### trash..... and watch the language....

Man you think they want corps people to set a good example or sumthin'.....

Seriously know of one DC concert show that was held in a public school. Sponsoring corps had a member who was a band director in the district so you figure slam dunk. Sure as #### they almost lost being able to use the school after the very first concert. Members of another corps were caught drinking on school grounds and gave the school official on duty crap about it. Sponsoring corps had to pay $$$ for either clean up or a fine (forget which) and had to promise that no one could even fart in the school to be able to have a second concert there. Offending corps was NOT invited back.....

And Larry warned all of us ***repeatedly*** ( at LEAST 4 times, Jim...) to behave on those school grounds because of the actions of that corps. You also forgot to mention that the host of the show had to hire plainclothes detectives to keep an eye for any possible shenanigans in the lot.

As for the nipple rings... I know where you're coming from. I've always felt when on staff somewhere to maintain some semblance of a professional outward appearance for those reasons myself. No MST3K "BITE ME!" shirts, etc.... :satisfied:

I don't think it was a lot, more like 2 or 3, with one particularly loud zealous one making herself look dumber with each comment.

I do wonder, though, given the dangers of skin cancer and continuing advancements in technology, if we couldn't get to a point of having clothes that cover the skin but stay cool enough to wear in high heat and exertion.

Thank you for posting the skin cancer idea, Kevin. It was more along those lines that I was thinking as I read the OP. It's no secret that the incidence of skin cancer is climbing ever-higher. While certainly more uncomfortable...I for one think it's a positive direction when one has the MM's future (post-Corps) health in mind.

Remember last year when some local paper posted pics of a corps rehearsing (Bluecoats? Maybe?) and a lot of people were getting angry at the paper for publishing child pornography?

I did a blog post last year about drum corps and my son's involvement in it. I write a blog that is mostly about health and science topics so to post about drum corps was a departure. I posted a picture of the kids rehearsing and a lot of skin was showing. The kids were sweaty and in a pose that looked, I later realized, like maybe they were moving in a suggestive way. That was not the case of course... it was just a snapshot of a section of "Rollin In the Deep". It didn't even dawn on me that anyone would take offense at this. I was just so proud of these kids. I even wrote that I was "drunk" on drum corps, meaning I was fully immersed in the culture. Wow, what a wrong expression to use!

Well, I received a letter out of the blue from a reader chastising me for getting 'drunk all the time' and showing suggestive pictures of kids on my website. The title of his letter was "bad parent" and I should be ashamed of myself. Well I was shocked to read this letter, just shocked. But I realized that this person was probably extremely narrow-minded, rigid and knew nothing about what drum corps really is. I didn't respond to him. I thought about it but I just let it go and chocked it up to an experience of misunderstanding.

The kids were definitely scantily clad in the shot I posted. Next time I might think twice about posting a photo like that. In my attempt to extoll the virtues of drum corps, I may have done the opposite!

I didn't hear about the undercover being hired Dub. And please PM me with the offenders name as that was not in the info I received. Irony is I worked with a guy who moonlighted as a Shaad Security guard around that area. Would have been funny as Hell if he had pulled that duty as he enjoys joking with Kris and myself.

Favorite corps shirt was seen as DCA Prelims ca 2003..... flaming pink with a pic of a mouthpiece.... and in big letters "BLOW ME!" Better than the "Drum Corps Sucks" shirts sold at shows in 1976. DCA corps were telling their members they could buy it but don't wear it near the corps or with the uni.

PS - after the second concert there I had to call the school that one of their HC bathroom stalls was not ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliant. Woman who answered was not too "cheery" and facilities guy didn't believe me but would check. 15 minutes later he called back sounding almost in tears. All the bathrooms had been remodeled for Handicapped access two years before but that one somehow was missing the hand rails. Guy was blubbering how much trouble they would be in if the state or Fed had noticed. Just got the feeling that parts of that district are wound waaaaaay too tight.
