My all time favorite is Adlai Stevenson. That prairie voice just sings, and he brings a gravity to it that no one else I have heard does.

I once heard an old recording of it done by the poet Carl Sandburg. Really, really "folksy" -- but not in a hackneyed way. Just simple...and believable. I think it was done with the NY Phil around 1960 or so.

One that I hated was done by Henry Fonda. All it conjures is his nasally "GAF" commercials from the 70's (shiver).

91 Devils was one of, if not the hardest brass books ever played on G bugles. It's not all about runs (though Devils certainly had those). The polychords in the Sebesky tune alone win that argument.

I'll have to go back and give it another listen. PM me a link to the audio if you know of one :)

Drumcat, you're completely correct. I also hear no compression, and 192 AAC is pretty darn high quality.

If someone is hearing compression, they're either misunderstanding what they're actually referring to in regards to "compression", OR (and just tossing this out there for the sake of being completely transparent about how Brightcove works) their internet connection is sluggish and they're being thrown an adaptive bitrate by Brightcove which is giving them a lesser quality broadcast for the tradeoff of still being able to watch the show. I will occasionally see this occur from time to time (even on my 90/10 Mbps connection) but it always quickly scales back up to the higher bitrate thereafter. If someone sits on or locks into the lesser bitrate, then they might be getting 96 kbps audio or similar. But this could be the only scenario I could imagine, outside of perhaps just less than perfect mic positioning for a given corps. But again, that's not compression.

Everything this evening sounded wonderful to me, and it was a pleasure to watch this without a hitch on my 60" with a pretty intense Harmon-Kardon receiver and Infinity surround setup. Thanks DCI!!!

Nooo, there was some compressor pumping earlier tonight. It was smoothed out later. The sound ended up very good on my Genelecs by the end of the night, but I assume that everything so far has been regarded somewhat as a dress rehearsal for tomorrow night.

Here's some interesting numbers management: Crown scored a 19.7 in visual proficiency with *four* corps left to perform. Um, yea...

Going back to what I said about scores being inflated this year...
