Since the trombone is a cylindrical bore instrument it will naturally get a harder edge to the sound when punched like that. But that's what the music is calling for. You don't want the bones to play that all pretty and dark. Doesn't work. That may be, but I sat right in front of them in Indy and needed a hot towel when they were done. You hear stuff from left but it's played on right and so on. That's fine... Just not my cup of tea. From a show design stand point, it is not the approach I would have gone with.
