Cavies/Scouts-Time for a change?

Recommended Posts

The one thing I did find amusing with Madison's show this year is when they were dancing with those female "cutouts". Not saying this in a bad way, but it left me wondering if they had ever considered letting in females for this year's guard. Did they have a female guard member in 2005?

I am fine with the all male, think it's cool but don't write a show that needs to have the fellows dance with cardboard girls... just saying

An honest question here: With the history and traditions of both cavies and scouts, would you really want to see females put into those corps? I'm not a feminist by any means, but a scout would not be a scout and a cavalier would not be a cavalier in those masculine identified uniforms, especially in the horn and drum lines if females were allowed in. But, then again Annapolis and West Point have allowed females in and they look pretty d*** good in those uniforms!

We're I of marching age, and I don't say this as a smart ###, I would rather spend the summer traveling around with 40 hot chicks then a bunch of sweaty dudes, but that is just me!

I can respect that, at the same time, I felt like I could focus better in rehearsal, plus there were plenty of ladies around at rehearsal, shows, free days that it wasn't an issue in my opinion.

Is this about the lack of awards or 1st place finishes. IMO corps win awards based on quality not the percentage of males verses females. Now if one wants to debate whether an all male or all female corps would attract the talent or enough talent thats another story. IMO even then what attracts talent is talent period.

Like most subjects i suppose. It's really not up to anyone other than those 2 corps as well as corps who chose to not have a specific gender in the guard for many reasons, 1 of which can be design. Of course there are many choices for members to go to if one does not like a policy of a corps. I find if one is so not into a corps policy they have no interest being there anyway.

I thought this thread would go into the ditch. But it pretty much hasn't! Well done everybody. Now keep your heads up, and your sticks on the ice.

Agreed. I think this has been a healthy discourse thus far!

To your point, I do recall being at DATR in 1999 I think. The Cavies drum majors were being escorted by two lovely ladies from the BK guard to the awards ceremony.... I remember thinking...so boss. Of, course back then, I think the words echoing in my head were something more along the lines of "wicked dope."

either this is a huge case of deja vu or this was talked about recently already. Anyways i feel like if Madison were to add females they should change the names to Madison Venture Scouts because i believe the tradition of Boy Scouts still runs in it and if they were to accept females then they should follow the venturing scouting which allows both. Just an opinion from an Eagle Scout. I dont think all male is hurting them at all because alot say that guard is the weakness but there are amazing guys and gals in guard so if they get a ton of those guys there are no problems. I think the problems come more on programming and design than the members. Do you think if BD or Cadets did the same shows exactly as those 2 are doing now they would be 1st and 2nd?

Oh look, this again...

Cavaliers I believe (I can't speak to Madison) are registered as a Fraternal Organization. Just like any other "boys club" there is.

No, we do not want girls in the Corps. Not because we don't think they can hack it (just look at all the other corps that have won championships), but because we are a brotherhood. There is a difference in a coed group and a Brotherhood. Through everything in life we know our Brothers will always be there for us and that is a special, shared relationship throughout all of our lives.

The issue of females never came up. Have you been to The Cavaliers truck after a show? Never a problem.

Also The Cavaliers are the only TRUE all-male drum corps, Madison has had two females march with them in the past :-).

(That last sentence was a loving jab)
