phd-student-TTU
Like Don Hill he has an incredible background in the high school world, Hebron this year at nationals absolutely destroyed Music and Music GE captions across all three rounds. Like Don Hill, I love his stuff he has done in the past. What I'm hoping is that he is a better fit, because while I love Don Hills other stuff, it just didn't fit well. Either that or maybe he wasn't allowed to/given much wiggle room to do what he could truly do. I dunno. We'll see. I'm hopeful but not getting my hopes up TOO far. I'll wait til I see his work in June to make a judgement there. Sure wasn't given much to work with at Spirit this last year despite there being some very nice moments in that show. I'll put it this way. If he's given good stuff to work with, not constrained by the power above, and is a good fit. It could be really good. We shall see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WfU8e9Dj7s And as far as this stuff goes. Need to listen to a lot of it. The Adams and Britten are nice pieces. Once again it seems like there's a bunch of composers that in theory should be a PERFECT fit for Phantom, just depends on the package they're delivered in. I'm just freakin thankful there's no more rehashed material in there again that will never live up to their original takes on them. We shall see. Not making the mistake of forming any opinions until I've seen it on the field. Thanks! I'll listen to all of this while I'm on the treadmill in a moment. Ditto regarding Hill. His drum corps stuff just didn't cut it. Didn't get to see or listen to SoA at all last year. Doesn't seem like I really want to either. phd-student-TTU
Hmmmm. Seems like the theme is either "Pete and Repeat are on a boat" or "Philip glass on a bender." Lots of repetitive, driving music. Not terribly lyrical save the two choir pieces (the second one was a pain to listen to...that poor choir!). Yes, I know. I can already here the roars from Jurassic park. "Why can't you say anything nice?!? "Go support someone else" and other non sequiturs. Blah blah blah. Not my favorite choices, but better than the last three years.
general_tsos_chicken2
I've been pessimistic because of their visual stuff but hearing Will Pitt's arrangement of Shost. op 34 is going to be worth the price of admission, I know it. It's going to be classic phantom regiment, which is what has been missing. I've wanted them to play this for a long time. I recommend listening to an orchestral transcription ( or even wind ensemble) to get a feel of what this can sound like with brass. xandandl
Hmm, seems like they are keeping that traditional Regiment color scheme: black, white, red... and no one gets killed... Edited November 30, 2015 by xandandl

war eagle
Nice music choices, except for the Cogen, which sounds like a bad Methodist church Sunday morning choir anthem. If they end up using it I hope it is seriously rewritten.
xandandl
For those who truly enjoy sources of music... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2wktbLNJHM It will probably be most special the last ten days of tour...
