FINALLY...a production about drum corps that isn't Drumline!

Recommended Posts

can't we just be EXCITED?? Worrying about "invented drama" or "copyrights" or "scripts" -- geez we are a jaded bunch

THE ROCK is producing a tv show following the Blue Devils and Cadets - all the way from winter camps to finals night. And it will be broadcast to 70-80 million homes! Woo hoo!

How cool is that!!???

BTW, I do find this pretty exciting.

George Hopkins, reality TV star.

If the producers know what they are doing, it could make for some entertaining TV for drum corps fans. Just thinking about how you can "compare and contrast" the two corps operations is intriguing.

the editing will have to be superlative. I understand that there were a few horn players who auditioned for both.

It be embarassing if they were included in the audition videos of the one but were later shown in the uniformed edition of the other.

Might confuse the viewer that DCI is actually MLB or NHL or other "professional" sports.

I'm pretty sure the editors would pick up on that... lol

Yup - the differences between Cadets & BD day to day are pretty striking from an insiders perspective. Not sure how much of that will bleed across on the tv screen

Re: Hopkins, hopefully he will say something controversial lol - drama = ratings

I just think it is such good exposure for the activity - hopefully lots of potential members will watch

Just received this:

Good afternoon,

For close to a year now, we have been working with Fuse, 44 Blue Productions, Seven Bucks Productions and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the creation of a reality TV series based on drum corps entitled, Hard Corps. Both the Blue Devils and The Cadets were approached, and we have been at work ever since.

HardCorps_cadets_bluedevils_collage.jpgThere have been attorneys, lots of phone calls, and in August there was a production crew following the corps in Indianapolis. In fact, we had a production crew at the audition camp last month as well.

The plan will be for the crew to follow the corps for a good portion of the summer. The series will follow four members of The Cadets and four members of the Blue Devils. Of course, they do want controversy and excitement, so who knows what will occur? I will say that there is nothing I am personally ashamed of that occurs within The Cadets, so I have little concern.

At the same time, I have always known that The Cadets are college-aged students, and they arrive with the same backgrounds of most college students. In short, they are NOT perfect, and I cannot expect them to be perfect. Yes, by the time they age out and graduate I would like to think they have a leg up on their peers; they see more of what is possible in life and the ramifications, both good and bad, of the decisions we make in life.

This will be a great opportunity.

Thank you for being a part of the adventure, and Happy Holidays!

If the producers don't pick up on that, they aren't very good.

BTW--there was a fun scripted show on last year called UnReal. It was about the behind the scenes of a reality dating show. I highly recommend it as a look at how producers weed through footage to search for the story potentials and people to focus on. The show was "over the top", but interesting.

Anyone in drum corps could probably figure out the drum corps archetypes that could be featured in this show: the young rookie, the vet age-out, the couple falling in love, the drum major, the foreign kid who speaks little English.

{Note: I was composing this BEFORE I read they will be following four members of each corps}

Because I have access to the ratings--and it may not be reported elsewhere--I'll keep people informed of how the show is doing.

the only concern I have is if the kids try to play for the cameras as opposed, ot ya know, focus on why they joined the corps. kids are kids. I'm sure they've been told, but still.

it's exposure. yes, there may be drama...holy hell, tip the producers to read this place during the season. LOL

I think it's an OK thing. I hesitate to say "It couldn't hurt!" but it certainly could help as well.

I have some concern of "be careful what you wish for." I am tempering my expectations accordingly.

Some more questions spawned by some assumptions and posts that am seeing:

  • Do you think this is selling drum corps to the general public?
  • Do you think this is promoting drum corps to potential future marching members (and their parents)?
  • Do you think this show is intended for you? (The intense and very well versed drum corps fan. You come to DCP after all)

better bad or so-so publicity than no publicity

To answer your questions -

No - I think the show's purpose is to garner ratings and sell commercials

No - but it can generate awareness. Those interested can then google for more...

Maybe - I would imagine the show expects to draw existing drum corps, marching-music, percussion fans and then a general audience on top of that. But that said, I don't expected to be "surprised" by anything or learn new things - having toured extensively

"Controversy?" I know we don't get a lot of what goes on during the summer, but I'm really just not sure much controversy exists or that any can be fabricated without looking completely unrealistic. Maybe Blue Devils will come up with a guard uniform that's way out there? Maybe they could have a side story where the members are told not to read a certain online forum while on tour because it's negative but then the cameras show the Directors of the corps secretly reading everything that's being posted.
