You're saying that was actually designed to be a bird's wings moving? Like an artist would draw birds at the seashore?? Or what a kid might see while laying on his Dad's station wagon roof watching the birds overhead and dreaming of being able to fly? OMG, seriously, George? wow. I'm exhausted. The opening set is a bird in a cloud. And yes I'm serious. It really isn't hard to spot lol It is reflected in the flags which are also a bird in a cloud Edited February 9, 2017 by George Dixon

Nowadays, it's almost obligatory to lead up to a big hit, and follow it with a (sometimes minute-long) percussion feature before the brass comes in again. Maybe because 45secs of tension building before the release is more effective? As for the rest: there are plenty of long "whole ensemble" pieces still being produced (as in everybody plays) . If by "start to finish" you mean "as written by the composer", it still happens but not very often. Not sure that's good or bad -- just different. There are still some arrangers who don't mince the music into confetti but instead give more respect to the original composers intent. There's also buck rodgers space plane, a jet from the front, aviator sunglasses and of course the rapid folding drill during the show when they are trying all kinds of shapes to perfect the best wing of a plane. The drill is fantastic to stay to our topic that opening hit is just wow! Edited February 9, 2017 by George Dixon

For a show that won the title... I feel it's underrated. Doesn't seem to get as many kudos as some other winning shows from the Cadets. 1984, '87, 2011, etc.
DrumManTx
1998 Glassmen starts off very in your face, love that whole show but the opening definitely fits the criteria here.
