I Did the Math: Allentown Scores and Prelims Seeding

Yes. Or at least, it was certainly true in the past. Magic of Orlando was nominally an Open Class ("Division II") corps when they made World Class ("Division I" finals in 2002.

If open class can kick out a world class corp, Pioneer and Jersey Surf are done and Cascades are on the brink of elimination. Legends and Spartans have pulled ahead and knocked them to 25th in both classes combined. In world class, Pio is 23, Jersey Surf 22, and Cascades 21. Legends has even surpassed Genesis at this point.

So I got really bored today and decided to flex my math muscles (or rather, Excel's Math Muscles).

Seeding for Prelims is determined by averaging the scores from San Antonio, Powder Springs/Winston-Salem (for those that were not in the former), and Allentown. Want to see your favorite corps move up a spot in the lineup? Here's how they can do it in Allentown!

Current Standings (Score Needed to Move)

Blue Devils

Santa Clara Vanguard (+0.500 over Blue Devils for 1st Seed)

Carolina Crown (+1.900 over Santa Clara Vanguard for 2nd Seed)

Bluecoats (+1.675 over Carolina Crown for 3rd Seed)

The Cavaliers (+2.350 over Bluecoats for 4th Seed)

Boston Crusaders (+2.625 over The Cavaliers for 5th Seed)

The Cadets (+1.625 over Boston Crusaders for 6th Seed)

Phantom Regiment (+3.775 over The Cadets for 7th Seed)

Blue Knights (+1.075 over Phantom Regiment for 8th Seed)

Crossmen (+3.525 over Blue Knights for 9th Seed)

Blue Stars (+0.850 over Crossmen for 10th Seed)

Madison Scouts (+3.875 over Blue Stars for 11th Seed)

Mandarins (+0.225 over Madison Scouts for 12th Seed)

The Academy (+4.875 over Mandarins for 13th Seed)

Troopers (+2.725 over The Academy for 14th Seed)

Colts (+0.925 over Troopers for 15th Seed and Big, Loud, and Live Appearance)

Spirit of Atlanta (+3.275 over Colts for 16th Seed)

Pacific Crest (+2.275 over Spirit of Atlanta for 17th Seed)

Oregon Crusaders (+1.375 over Pacific Crest for 18th Seed)

Genesis (+4.050 over Oregon Crusaders for 19th Seed)

Seattle Cascades (+1.350 over Genesis for 20th Seed)

Jersey Surf (+6.825 over Seattle Cascades for 21st Seed)

Pioneer (+5.850 over Jersey Surf for 22nd Seed)

I've done a little math myself.

Nicely done.

Yes, four or five Open Class corps have qualified for World Class Semifinals each year since 2011, when they reinstated the practice of having all corps in World Class Prelims. That means that two to three World Class corps have missed Semifinals in each of those years. However, be wary of comparing scores between the Open Class and World Class shows right now.

Going off of OP's post, I've figured out a few scores that corps need to move up or down tonight. Anyone not listed here is probably locked into their spot, barring a catastrophe or a miracle.

  • Vanguard can take the #1 seed for Prelims with a score of 96.013 or higher tonight.
  • Blue Knights can pass Phantom for 8th with a score of 88.075 or higher.
  • If the Crossmen score below an 85.350, the Blue Stars will pass them for the 10th seed
  • Madison needs to score an 82.501 or higher to stay ahead of the Mandarins for 12th.
  • The Oregon Crusaders can move up to 18th with a score of 77.525 or higher.

Helpful and disappointing. I both like some knowledge and some mystery.

So I take it that neither SCV Cadets nor BDB could make the Top-15 Big Loud Live because they weren't at San Antonio, Atlanta, etc.  But it is possible that although they will perform earlier still could rank in the top 15 (or higher) depending on score earned?

Or so could Pioneer for that matter I suppose - if their members all simultaneously had the performance of their lives (whether the judges would score it high enough is another thread or two)

Blue Knights, Crossmen, and Madison met their targets (possibly others as well, need to look at scores again).
