Broiling in Texas

DCI really should drop the Texas tour next year--all the shows are going to have to push back their start times. Even then, dangerous heat is unsafe for the kids and the fans.  I know that the corps make a lot of money on that 8 day tour, but temps are only going to rise further in the coming years. In Europe, Portugal and Spain are burning up-- even London will see temps over 100 degrees next week. If drum corps touring is to survive, the tour should turn northward.

I was thinking about this too. Maybe reorienting the season such that the San Antonio regional is in Minneapolis.

In the bigger picture, I think we should really enjoy drum corps while we can...

The recruiting opportunities in Texas are too big for DCI to consider leaving.  No other state compares to the high school marching band scene in Texas. I would venture a guess that most every corps in world class has a member from Texas in their ranks.

Hey, we’re in luck. Looks like there’s going to be a bit of a cool down on Thursday. 😅

Unfortunately, it looks like I may not be able to make the Denton show, but at least there’ll be some cooler weather that day. /sarcasm

Good grief.  Don’t spontaneously combust.

Here in Georgia, it barely rained but was around 100 for May and June. Lately it has been more normal - maybe low 90s, high humidity and big storms in the evening. Dew points in the mid-70s and heat indexes above 100.

Is ~2 weeks of this sustainable? Especially with people recovering of COVID etc. Not that more northern lattitudes aren’t getting way up there more often as well.

Summer Band Camps in July on a blacktop field were always terrible. Constant 100+ temperature for 1-2 hours.

Personally, I'd want to see a competition in the Ford Center. 12,000 seater, indoors, well lit. Graduation there was great

This is criminal. I am a racing fan - Formula 1 and Le Mans etc - and they always give the track temperature as well as air temperature. Track temp is always much higher, because it's unshaded asphalt. It can get up to 140 F.

In 2014, went to a race in Austin in mid-September. There was a college band standing on the track. waiting to play before the race, which started at 4pm. As someone who understood both sides of the dynamic, I really wanted them to get the band off the track. I saw 4-5 kids have to be taken off from heat in 10 minutes

Why would DCI schedule 7 shows in Texas in late July and early August? Just doesn't make sense when the weather is great in the Midwest and North.
