The Madison Scouts present their 2023 production titled The Sound Garden. Influenced by the Seattle-based rock band “Soundgarden”, who are themselves named for an aural-based art installation, the show’s intent is to combine an energetic combination of musical styles, sounds, and visual textures to create and cultivate a blooming garden of sound.

Returning for his 23rd season as the Madison Scouts composer and arranger, Scott Boerma, has crafted a creative soundtrack anchored by selections from the rock group Soundgarden, as well as big band repertoire, sourced from both contemporary and classic jazz composers.

The The Sound Garden source material includes:

  • Rusty Cage - Chris Cornell/Soundgarden
  • La Mer - Claude Debussy
  • Hold Music - Jacob Mann
  • Black Hole Sun - Chris Cornell/Soundgarden
  • 23 Degrees North, 82 Degrees West - Bill Russo/Stan Kenton

“We bring to the field a show with a lot of power and energy right from the start of the production,” says Program Coordinator Jason Robb. “Our priority in design was to give our membership a show that can connect with the audience emotionally and provide an opportunity to entertain fans night after night as we make our way through this summer's DCI tour.”

Nice!

And glad that Boerma is back and arranging. Love that they are taking chances with Jazz and overall great music that we wouldn’t expect to hear on the field. Very much looking forward to this!

But just one thing…for the love of Seattle, please do not have a patch or someone singing “ Black Hole Sun won’t you come and wash away the rain….”. Same with Rusty Cage, (which should be a phenomenal “in your face” opener). There is one Chris Cornell. And that Chris Cornell is hard to duplicate. Let the horns and percussion be the cover band and maybe some synth for those weird guitar riffs.  If Black Hole Sun is the ballad, I’d like to hear something rough. Please no Sarah McLaughlin- esque patches. Beef it up and make it edgy.

Last Train Home? Based on the description alone reminds the theme reminds me of RCC '23

The 2023 Colts invite you to embrace the warmth and authenticity of their 60th anniversary production, Where The Heart Is.

This year's program embodies the heartfelt concept that, regardless of one's location or companions, the deepest affection and emotional pull always stem from family and home. It signifies that home is not merely a physical structure but a place where relationships, warmth, and memories converge — a sanctuary where one finds a sense of belonging and fulfillment alongside the people they hold dear.

For some, home is a tangible space with a specific address, where they feel comfort and serenity. Others perceive home as a state of mind, a profound sentiment of being precisely where they are meant to be. Moreover, home can be personified through a special individual or a close-knit group, those who genuinely understand and uplift you. Irrespective of the definition, the essence of home lies in feeling the unwavering love and support of those around them

One of my favorite bands. To this day, Rusty Cage makes me think of driving back and forth to rehearsals at Bayer field in Rockford back in 92, before start of first tour. (That album was in frequent rotation that summer, along with Ten from Pearl Jam and and Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers.) Funny how memory works…
