The rest are flanking to horn line. See this picture.

A street vender pressing his luck.

It was always more fun when they were facing the same direction we were. More than a few got knocked around by us over the years. Since most of us hated parades, looking for "targets" like this was our entertainment.

OK, OK. We weren't mean to little kids or pets that got in the way, just adults and especially teenagers!

I ask because I really do not know. Was it required for DBC's to march Parades at certain Shows. I do remember doing parades after many Shows around the Ohio, Mich, Illinois, Canada area. Were Corps payed for the parade?

Dean

Yes. Some big shows like the U.S. Open, World Open, American Legion and VFW conventions had mandatory parades as part of the deal. Sort of like a side show.

Some celebrations like the Barnum Festival or a giant 4th of July town celebration like Bristol, RI had a huge parade (with seemingly endless waiting to start) and the show was, well, the side show.

Some of the parades were also judged using various schemes.

In the end it was always a killer having to march an exhausting parade for a couple or three miles in the hot sun in front of an indifferent or worse, hostile crowd (think lots of beer) and then having to get your act together that same night for an important show. The horn line was often required to play virtually the whole way (some organizers had "watchers" follow musical units to make sure they played) and blisters and/or very hot, sore feet from scorching pavement were often just two added attractions to make your show performance all the more difficult. We've all been there I think.

Even today (I'm 52, you'd think I'd get over it by now.) I still hate parades and will not even go to watch. I have other drum corps friends that love them and still go out of their way to watch one. Go figure.

Everytime I look at this picture all I can think of is my father coming in the house at 5:15 every day after work and saying... Hazel, Schlitz!!

We went out the other night and one of the people with us ordered a Schlitz.

I had already ordered a Capital Island Wheat or I would have gotten one too.

My parents had a frig in the basement that was filled with Schlitz, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Red, White & Blue.

I agree Linda, they always had an excellent guard & I think this pic lays it out. Check out the perfect heel toe...we see the underside of their boots as their heels are digging in, Also perfect arrangement of tallest to shortest from the middle slopping to the ends and their arm positioning is PERFECT slope of their arms, position of the hands, and thus causing perfect interval.... I just love love this picture. An old school flag line at it's finest.

I love the picture too Wendy. Thanks for your exquisite words in describing the 70’s Blue Stars guard. An excerpt from Toronto Optimists’ web site about 1976 Seneca Optimists; ‘Colour guard, which was a great strength of the Seneca corps, was instructed by…’ (you know who:-) I want to thank you for being there for the drum corps ladies I grew up with, some of whom may be in the 1969 program scan below when they, um we, were very young. 6 ladies had a small get together in 2006; Jo, Mo, Nick, Nanc, Claire and me. We had fun. btw, the snare on the end in the photo of Del on parade in 1971, page 1658 post 16578, looks like Furiano

Blue Stars - World Open Parade July 16, 1971

It appears that the street is exactly 18 girls wide. Perfect!

There were 54 photos posted starting back at page 1646.

We could have posted a better score that year had we not worn our drums so low. I saw a photo of the snare line and it appalled me. I'm allowed - I was one of them.

Without looking at your signature, I know you had to be from Wisconsin!

I once thought of moving up to WI and opening a bait/fireworks/cheese/beer/porno store.
